Barely Saved.
Leggett, tho Tatnall county mur-
deror, who was to have suffered tho
penalty which the law fixes for his
crime on last Friday, has boon re
prieved by the Governor and the ex
eoution put off for thirty days, with
a possible chance for the commuta
tion of the sentence to imprisonment
for life.
William Clifton, Leggett’s attor
ney, . received telegrams from the
Govornor Thursday morning, in
forming him of Leggett’s rospite for
thirty days. .Mr. Clifton was in -his
bod in Savannah when ho received
the Governor’s telegram, and when
he left the train at Johns
ton’s station, on tho Suvanuah
Florida and Western railway, he liad
forty miles to drive through acoun
try not distinguished for good roads.
While Leggett was Watching
the first gleams of duwn, through the
cell window, his faithful lawyer
was urging a pair of horses * across
tho country at a breakneck speed.
The sheriff had just turned to
step down off tne scaffold preparatory
to springing tho fatal trigger,
when Mr. Clifton pushed his way
through the crowd and shouted to
him thut he bad a message from the
Govornor. Mr. Clifton then pres
ented the Governor’s telegrams to
the sheriff, and stepped upon tho
platform and auuounced to the as
sembled multitude that a respite bad
been granted.
Leggett was slow to understand
that ho was not j;o die, and seemed
dazed and unable to believe the good
news. When it dawned upon him
that he was saved ho was frantic in
his efforts to be released, and when
unbound, immediately dropped on
his knees and poured out his thanks
to bis God and his attorney.
Rotation in Crops.
All good farmers umlorsltuid the
.importance of rotation in crops.
Those 'farms arc the most produc
tive and honcu tho most profitable
on which tho rotation systom is fol
lowed. Tho riiiladolphiu Record,
speaking ou this subject, says that
thoro is no soil dint can bo consider
ed ns inexhausliblo in fertility'. It
may produce largo crops for many
years, but every pound of substanco
removed from it takes away so much,
and sooner orjlatcr tho yield will be
gin gradually to lessen. Especially
is this true when tho soil has been
dovoted to ouo kind of orop. Ou
tho rich soils of tho West tho land
was kept in corn year after year,
with good yields as tho result, but
time proved the error of so doiug.
Tho true mode of cultivation is by a
judicious systom cf rotation. Tho
soil may fail to produco certain crops
and yot bo rioh and well adapted to
some othor kind. The three groat
elements of fertility aro nitrogen,
phosphoric acid and potash, to which
we may add lini'e, and as loug as tho
soil contains those elomonts it will
be oapablo of growing any orop sui
table to tho climate; but tho differ
ont crops do not food alike, some re
quiring an excess to certain elements
that are not in demand to Buoh an
extent by others. A orop of wliont
takos away a largo proportiop of
nitrogen and phosphoric acid, but
requires a smaller proportion of pot
ash. It is plain that by growing
wheat on the land for several years
the nitrogen and phosphoric acid
would be lurgoly reduced in quantity
while the land would still bo rioh in
potash. By growing some other
orop that thrives best on potash, as
clover, tho soil would still bo capa
ble of yielding bountifully. while tho
roots andtstubblo of tho olovor
would return a proportion of tho
nitrogen required .for a succeeding
crop. By rotation, therefore, tho
plant food is not only proportioned
to different crops, but a system of
renovation of the soil is also the re
sult. No matter ivhat crops may bo
grown, it cannot bo denied that
something cannot bo dorived from
nothing, and manure and fertilizers
aro alwuys bonefioial; yet the best
system is that whioh utilizes’ tho
jjtorago-cnpaoity of the plants to de
rive a portion of tiio elomonts requir
ed from tho atmosphoro, and rota
tion is thus of valuable assistnnoo.
The inert matter of the soil is re
duced to solubility, tho rains assist
tho roots to store up mutter and tho
soil is botter enabled to supply tho
proper food required for ouoli plant.
