7. A8 A worm OF ART. •tMilan Il.it* ilnirnr'a fmprMitodi of Uio llarUitiMI si,tint*. Nolld liroiizo iiftvw looked more etho- ;ri»t than when, on tlin afiornooti of < ret. 28, the (treat ilolilla ot steamship* drew near, thi'ouifli. tho Imr.y rain, to the statue on Liberty Island. A dusky Mm reared itsulf against the pallid sky, Jfke a shadow east upon a transparency. Jt seemed as unsubstantial as a vision, though its oh Hines were full of gran deur and repose. Approached more closely, s tliu great form slowly sol id i lied unci towered higher and higher aloft, ns if it were drifting towards u.s through the sea-fog, a mysterious daughter of the ocean, becoming Incar nate while wo gazed upon her. And when, at length, we lay within the swoop, as It were, of her uplifted arm, and could distinguish tho folds and fall of her garments, and apprehend tho pose of her majestic figure, the spell of wonder and silence 'descended upon ns, children of Liberty as we were, standing for tbc first time, in the presence of our mighty mother. Tills statue is certainly the outcome of a sublime imagination, working for noble ends. There lk, It* Is true, a brutal sort of Impressiveness ju gigan tic size alone; but in this work tho design is of such quality that even the miniature models, which have become so familiar to Now Yorkers, nrr«at the attention by their dignity. There is nothing small in tho treatment: the lines ami composition arc vast in their quality, as well as in their dimensions - vast and simple. The conception is us great as tjic accomplished reality, .it is a thing which takes its place 'quietly and naturally in the midst of ,t)ie broad scene of which itlstluicul- i iiimtion; it is at once at home there; though it ivwch, it does uot astonish; once in its place, it seems to have stood thoro singe the dawn of time, Title rain and mists were its friends and familars; 'hud the sunshine will rust upon it as f'.ltlngly as upon tho peak of a iriouu- i in, and the clouds, at noon anftsuu- i c.t. will form a part of its grandeur, or ; iorlfy it with their crimson and. gold. When the thunder rolls across the bay, those lofty lips will seem to have spoken, and the snow of winter will drift around It like n drifting veil. Though the bronze goddess stands motionless and tirm, she scorns but a ‘ moment ago to have assumed tho at- ’ tithde which she will retain through • i'cnfSurios to coino. Sho has stepped ’forward, and halted, and raised her Month into the sky. .There is energy ’AVithout effort, and movoment com- Jduhirwitli repose, lief aspect is grave almost to sternness; yet her faultless 'Ventures wear the serenity of power 'and conitdence. ller message is the ' sttbllmost ever brought to man, but she '■is adequale to its delivery. Jn her left lluiml she holds a tablet inscribed with the most glorious of our memories, tho ^birthday of the RopuWiu. No words nre needed to interpret her meaning for her gesture arid her countenance ♦ peak Urn universal language, and t mil utterance reaches to the purest depths of the human soul. The crowd thronged around hor pedes tal and looked upas against tho front of r mountainoliir. The steaming vapors drifted around her crowned head; she j.ppeural a part of the heavens, dtvlno, mid yet human, founded* upon a rock. 5 ho filled the eyes ami satisfied tho imagination. Antiquity never gave birth to anything so great, either in spirit or in substance, .Sho is the genius of .Ymorhu, because America Is 1 Revolt tho symbol of whatever is npWost and of greatest hope in tho world, -Julian Hawthorne in the New York World. Lobnnon Shakers Found-Incident jn the His tory of a Quiet Community. Tho Mount Lebanon (New York) Shakers are a quiet com munity, secluded from the fret and worry of the outside world They are widely known, how ever, for their strict honor and probity in business. The Shakers believe that na ture lias a remedy for every dis ease. A few have been found— the rest are as yet unknown. Many were discovered by acci dent Others came to light as the result of patient experiment, and research. Nervous Dyspepsia is a com paratively new disease, growing out of the conditions of modern life. It is a joint affection of tho digestive organs and of the nervous system. These two were formerly treated as sepa rate ailments, and it was left for the plefU’-sighied Shakers to prove that the basis of this terrible and often fatal compli cation lids chiefly in tho disord ered and depraved functions of digestion and nutrition. They reasoned thus:—“If we can in duce the (jloinach to do its work, and stimulate the excre tive organs to drive put of the body the poisonous waste mat ters which vemniu ufler the life- giving elements of the food hiivn been absorbed, we sball have conquered Nervous Dys pepsia and Nervous Exhaust ion. And they were right Knowing the infallible power of Shaker Extract (peigel’s Syrup) in less complicated though similar diseases, they resolved to test it fully in this. To leave no ground for doubt they prescribed the remedy in hundreds of cases which jind been pronounced in curable—with perfect success in every instance where their directions as to lining and diet were scrupulously followed. Nervous Dyspepsia -and Ex haustion is a peculiarly Ameri can disease. To a greater or less extent half the people of this country suliei; from it— both soxes and all ages.
