198 Peachtree Street. - ATLANTA, GEORGIA Panama canal supplies. It is morally certain that the gulf ports could han dle the situation just as well as it can be handled from New York, and at a considerable saving to the govern ment. Texas is interested, and this state should be prompt to act in the premises. Our Galveston friends should proceed to get busy. THE AMERICAN ARMY. (London Spectator.) The United States regular army, which is regarded as the basis or skel eton of a much larger army in time of war, is probably, both as to officers and men, the best physically, the most intelligent, the most highly trained and the most perfectly equipped of any army in the world. LEWIS ACCEPTS. John A. Lewis becomes Dowie’s suc cessor as overseer of Zion City. In his will Dowie leaves his widow a dow ry, while Gladstone, his son, is given 110. SHOULD BE COPIED. (Louisville Courier-Journal.) “I shall count nothing failure but failure to do right,” is the maxim of Gov. Hughes. This maxim is not copy righted, but there is no great danger of its being stolen by all the govern ors at once. WHERE IT HURTS. (The Public Ledger.) The New York legislature has passed a bill to temper the power of police Inspectors and make them amenable to discipline. Great fear exists now that these distinguished gentlemen, re ceiving $3,5000 salaries, cannot live at the rate of $50,000 a year any more. “RISKS” AND RISKS. (The Kansas City Star.) It is announced that Paul Morton, president of the Equitable Life Assur ance Society, is going to personally ‘‘hustle for risks.” It is tolerably cer tain, however, that Mr. Morton is too wise to take such risks as McCall, Mc- Curdy, Hyde and Alexander took. HARRIMAN’S HAND. (Ozark Tribune.) “See Harriman’s Hand,” reads a headline. At this distance, it reads like four aces, with a chance to get another in a draw. HUNTING FOR HIS OWN. (Ozark Tribune.) When Mr. Bryan goes to Washing ton next month to deliver an address on “Lincoln,” he might stroll around the White House grounds, and see if any of his stolen clothes are hanging out on the line. BOILED DOWN. (The Philadelphia Record.) In effect the president’s explanatory statement of his views on the railroad situation is an intimation that it is “up to congress” to determine future action. He stands pat. If there be more aggression there must be more statutory push. On the whole this is reassuring. A nod is as good as a wink. I Dr. W. M.
