As a result of the investigation by
the legislative committee into the ex
penditure of $9,000,000 for furnishings

criminal proceedings will be instituted

NOW THE GRANGERS LAUGH.
(The New York World.)
Nothing like Wall street’s appeal to
Washington for guidance, sympathy,
and counsel has been heard since the
Western farmers in the early ’9o’s
had a similar experience with tight
money and undigested securities, the
latter being in the form of wheat,
corn, and live stock. The farmers ap
plied to the government for assistance
and were laughed at mightily in New
York.

WATSON’S WEEKLY JEFFERSONIAN.
VOICE OF THE FARMER.
(The Boston Herald.)
Baron Sternberg is observant. He
tells the reporters in Berlin that one
hopeful augury for reciprocity be
tween his country and ours is “the
agitation of the tariff issue, particu
larly in the middle and western
states.” Massachusetts should be in
close touch with this movement, in
order to give, where they are most
needed, speakers and literature.
Books are the food of youth, the delight of old age, the refuge
and comfort of adversity, a delight at home, and no hindrance
abroad; companions by night, in traveling, in the country.”—Cicero.
