MR. WATSONS EDITORJALS
RAILROAD MURDERS!
(Continued from page 1.)
pression; but what painter in words or colors
can body forth the horrors of a lingering
death in the flames of burning cars, with the
groans of the dying and the shrieks of the
maimed ringing in one’s ears?
Criminal Negligence! That is the insatia
ble murderer. How long will it be before hv
is brought to justice?
The Coast Line Road cleared 30 per cent
net earnings several years ago —and watered
its stock thirty per cent; today the Depart
ment of Justice is after that Railroad, th *
criminal side of the Federal Courts, for its
refused to obey the law as to safety appliances.
Why isn’t President Emerson guilty before
God and man for everv life lost on his Coast
Line Road for lack of those safety ap
pliances?
The South Carolina Commission and the
Virginia Commission, and the National Inter
state Commission have all been after the
Southern Railway Company for non-com
pliance with law, the fault of the corporation
being the failure to provide safety appliances,
to remove rotten crossties, to use heavy rails,
and to spend sufficient money to make the
roads safe.
Why wasn’t Spencer responsible, and why
isn’t Finley responsible, for the loss of life
caused by these non-performances of duty?
Did you read the newspapers of Saturday,
May 11 ? If so, you saw where Harriman was
watering the stock of two of his roads one
hundred and eleven million dollars!
Did vou read the papers on the Monday fol
lowing? If so, you saw a detailed statement

WATSON’S WEEKLY JEFFERSONIAN.
of the awful wreck on one of those very roads.
A train load of passengers, going at terrific
speed and rushing into a defective switch; then
a shattered train, and a scene of suffering and
death which beggars description. Some thir
ty-five people killed outright, and those were
the victims which suffered least. Os those
who were scalded, whose flesh was cooked in
the boiling water, whose skins peeled off
when their clothes were removed—who can
tell the agony?
Think of this:
One passenger was eating at a corner table;
the wreck came; the hot water tanks poured
their contents over him; brave rescuers drag
ged him from under the scalding steam; he
murmured, “Thank God,” and died.
And it might just as well have been me, or
you; my wife or yours; my child, or yours!
It is liable to happen to any of us that travel
cn the Railroads.
And at the very time this defective switch
was sending thirty-five men to sudden death
in California, the President of the road was
in New York busy at his old trick of watering
the stock!
Why shouldn’t criminals like E. H. Harri
man be sent to the gallows for murders oc
casioned by his Criminal Negligence?
Why should Emerson and Finley be immune
from prosecution? They are quick enough to
jerk up some little fellow —some signal man,
or train dispatcher—and make a scapegoat of
him; why shouldn’t the real criminals be pun
ished? The real murderers, in the sight of a
just God, are the managers and chief owners
of the roads who refuse to obey the law, and
thus cause these awful losses of human life.

A LETTER TO MR. WATSON.
My Dear Sir:—One of my favorite Biblical
phrases is that in which Christ commanded
his followers to “render unto Caesar, the
things which are Caesar’s,” etc. With this
expression in mind, attached I am sending you
a clipping which appeared in the New York
Journal a few days ago, and which I felt that
in justice to yourself, you should see, that you
might know that one who serves the people
unselfishly, does not go entirely unappreciated.
1 he question I put to Editor Brisbane was the
outcome of a political argument I had with
some of the Republican leaders of my county.
Among the many things they attributed to the
administration, and to which I took issue,
was the promotion of the rural free delivery.
I quickly challenged them on that, and our ar
gument finally centered itself on that point.
More, I hope, on account of my youthfulness
than doubtful veracity, they hotly contended
I was wrong. I, fully convinced that they had
not beaten me on argumentative theory, re
solved that I wouldn’t be beaten on record, if
I could help it. I acted on their suggestion to
write the Journal editor to prove my case.
You can realize what a consolation it was to
read the reply.
I underscored the article “A light to lighten
the Gentiles and a glory to thy people, Israel,”
and mailed each of them a copy.
Mr. Watson, I trust the time will come when
there will be a universal recognition of your
services to the people. Personally, I appre
ciate most highly your vindication of popular
rights, and I hope, that you may live long
to receive the gratitude of appreciative people.
Most truly yours, W. C. ELLIS.
