BEVERIDGE IN HOT WATER OVER
TALK OF WITCHES.
Senator Beveridge’s Speech Arouses
Bitter Storm of Protest from
Historical Societies.
(The Tampa Tribune.)
Boston, Mass. —Salemites, who adore
accuracy of tradition above all
other earthly things, and who adore
the portraits of their ancestors as the
Incas did the rays of the sun, have
been lashed into a very frenzy of in
dignation against Senator Beveridge
in particular, and the rest of the world
in general, over what they declare to
be “an impious calumny” cast upon
the memory of the early settlers of
their community.
Senator Albert J. Beveridge, of In
diana, has dared proclaim that the
Puritan forefathers of the Witch
City wantonly burned the victims of
witchcraft there and so it is written
in the shadowry history of the col
onies.
In Salem indignant historical soci
eties and learned historians who have
spent years in gathering facts relat
ing to the details of the witchcraft
obsession declare that Senator Bev
eridge’s misstatement is the straw that
has broken the camel’s back; that the
fair name of Salem has been slander
ed long enough and that a movement
will now be organized to give nation
al publicity to truth about that lamen
table chapter of witchcraft.
Only Hanged Them.
That their misguided ancestors
hanged witches and did not burn them
is insisted upon by history reverenc
ing Salemites.
It is declared that even the cold,
superstitious hearts of the Puritans
forebore resorting to this last cruel
ty, as being contrary to their pious
beliefs.
In a recent letter written by a prom
inent historian who has compiled a
supposed authorative history of witch
days, the latter declares that the
base insinuations which imply that
witches were burned are intended to
cast a slander upon Salem and are un
true.
“Witches were never burned in Sa
lem. There is nothing in the records
to prove this,” said he. “Eminent and
learned men who so state and who
should know better, and would if they
had studied history, are merely mak
ing a display of their ignorance and
committing a slanderous falsehood
when they say so. It is time that Sa
lem rose and settled the matter once
and for all.”
Other Salem historians lay the
blame somewhat upon the careless ac
ceptance of the ancient burnings in
England and Scotland as afterward
applying in like manner to the colo
nies.
A Scottish Precedent.
Witches were first burned in Scot
land in 1536. In England 30,000 met
their death by torture and burning at
the stake before the advent of the
Puritans in Salem.
HYMNS PROPER TO THE DAY.
(The London Telegraph.)
It was Archbishop Temple who com
plained that when he stayed with a
parson “they always give me ‘The
Church’s One Foundation’ and cold
chicken, and I hate them both.” A
bishop of a more sentimental turn
was recently staying with one of his
country clergy. About the breakfast
hour he heard the strains of “Rock
of Ages” sounding through the house.
At the breakfast table he remarked
how sweetly the hymn sounded. Then
said the vicar’s last born. “That was
cook.” The bishop expressed pleasure
at the melodies of cook. “She always
sings ‘Rock of Ages’ to boil the eggs,”
said the child; “three verses for soft
boiled, five for hard.”

In Making A Fortune?
Nothing so surely offers as safe an investment and large returns
as a good manufacturing stock. Probably you do not realize how
many people that are enjoying a regular income as the results from
investing in manufacturing stocks. There are thousands of them
and they are largely these who bought/their stock when the op

Company had been fully developed.
Stucks of many manufacturing companies have advanced from
a few dollars a share to prices ranging from SIOO to $5,000 a share
m value, and besides have paid back to the investors in dividends
many times what they first invested. Many of the companies are
paying from 50 to 100 per cent in dividends on the first price for
stock.
Twenty-live years ago, Bell Telephone stock sold at $1 a share;
this stock has increased in value to over SI,OOO a share.
A few yeais ago, Linotype Machine stock sold at $25 a share;
this stock is worth over SI,OOO a share today on the open market.
To grasp such an opportunity, purchase stock in the Empire
Machine Company at $25 a share. This company is in the hands
of men whose ability and integrity cannot be questioned, and these
men pledge themselves to see that each and every invester in the
enterprise receives an equal division of the profits.
CONCRETE.
Concrete has long been recognized as the building material of
the future; its development as such is becoming a necessity. That
some new material is needed is proven by the diminishing supply
of wood, which is estimated will all be cut in 20 years.
Wooden buildings have practically a short life of usefulness,
and buildings of brick, although they have a longer life, are sub
ject to weather conditions ami will eventually disintegrate. Con
crete, on the contrary, when subject to the same conditions, becomes
stronger as time goes on.
The Empire Machine Company has just been organized as man
ufacturers of Concrete Block Alachines, Concrete Brick Alachines,
Concrete Alixers, Concrete Sidewalk Machines, Concrete Fence Post
Afachines, etc.
This company has been inc< rporatod with a capital stock of
$250,006, divided into shares of par value, S.IOO a share, temporary
price, $25 a share.
Our Al atbines are filly protected by United States and Foreign
Patents. There is over 300 per cent profit in their manufacture;
this enormous profit and the rapidly inci easing demand for Concrete
Machinery should make this stock pay dividends of 50, or even
100 per cent a year in the rear future. Dividends will be declared
semi-annually.
