subservient to wealth, then it is that
political suicide is inevitable.
Are the American people so un
conscious of their liberty that they
are indifferent to the infringements
upon it? Everywhere are they reck
lessly throwing away rights they pre
tend to cherish, secured to them by
their forefathers after mighty strug
gles and tremendous sacrifices. By
a long period of general indifference
they have allowed corrupt and unscru
pulous men to sell away their rights
and privileges. The common people
must speedily awaken to these dangers
which threaten the republic ,or this
fair land must needs share the ter
rible fate of the commonwealths which
have gone before, for these are the
evils which wrecked both Greece and
Rome. The time to kill the goose that
lays the golden egg is at hand. Brib
bery and corruption have too long con
trolled our destinies. Something
must be done to correct these evils,
if this nation is to march on repeat
ing and perpetuating the victories of
peace and virtue.
The magnitude of the evil makes it
seem almost beyond remedy, yet these
dangers are traceable to the lack of
civic virtue, and lie in the failure of
the general public to interest them
selves in the questions of the state.
If we would free ourselves of the ter
rors which beset us, it will be necessa
ry to arouse and marshal public
opinion against them. An earnest ap
peal will have to be made to the intel
ligence and to the hearts of American
citizens to pilot the ship of state. A
higher conception of civic duty will
have to be cultivated, and those forces
which make for good government must
be nourished. The character of our
representatives must be raised and
bribery stripped of every comfortable
cloak. We must purge corporations of
corruption and fraud, curb the rapaci
ty of greedy men, and destroy the
powerful influence of the lobbyists.
These conditions can only be changed
by an awakened public spirit, by a
patriotism which will feel that a
“country worth dying for in war is
worth working for in peace.”
Courageous and upright manhood
must take command in politics. Ev
ery honest citizen must realize his
individual responsibility for the affairs
of the state and nation. He must be
loyal to his trust and earnest in his
allegiance. He should take his place
in the forefront of the battle exposing,
denouncing and combating with un
flinching and unfaltering courage the
evils of his time, no matter who de
fends them or what criticism he pro
vokes. If he conquer he will receive
a more glorious reward than ever war
rior won, for he will not only secure
for his native land that freedom and
equality for which so many lives have
been sacrificed on the bloody fields of
battle, but he will give to his country
a higher prosperity than has yet been
attained.
Political vigilance is the most im
portant duty of a citizen and the high
est privilege of a patriot.
