tacts and fancies for the fireside
TO LIVE LONG.
First breathe at all times the
open air as much as possible, with
out contraction of the chest and ab
domen by clothing.
Second, drink freely of cool water
whenever thirst is present, except
with meals, and no other liquid at
any time.
Third, sleep at regular hours with
the stomach entirely empty.
Fourth, eat only when hungry, and
never within four hours previous to
or after a night’s sleep, with no
lunches or nibblings except as a part
of the regular meal.
All persons who adopt these four
rules for their guidance will find
that if they are now in good health
they will continue so; if they are
suffering from any curable, diseased
condition, relief will soon show it
self and in a short time will become
so manifest as to convince the most
skeptical that they are on the road
to physical happiness.—Pittsburg

If you arise at 5 a. m., breakfast
at 9 a. m. If you retire at 9 or 10
p. m., dine at 5 or 6, two meals are
contemplat' d, and the 24-hour day is
wisely divided. I think this may fit
in some department of your maga
zine if approved.

Home without a woman’s care and
a woman’s love is like no home at
all—only the empty nest in a win
ter’s gale from which the birds have
flown.
Who but a woman —when Judas
betrayed, and Peter denied, and the
weary slept, and the fearful fled—
could summon energy to linger
around the spot, to mingle the tears
of pity with the blood of suffering?
Who but a woman, when man turn
ed coward, and his trust grew faint,
could stand until the last by the dy
ing Savior, and then go to trim the
lamp of her devotion at the door
of the sepulchre?
Look to the bright side. It is the
right side. The times may be hard,
but it will make them no easier to

OLD MAN GIDDLES OBSERVES:
(Copyrighted by W. D. Nesbit.)
One man is as good as the next,
unless you get next.
Some people are interested in your
welfare; others are merely inquisi
tive.
One good thing about hunting for
the north pole is that you miss most
of the news about sensational mar
riages.
A man who has reformed three or
four times can predict to the day
how soon it will be before a new
convert backslides.
The ordinary boy can give the or

him and beat it in a contest with
death by violence.
One of life’s disappointments is
thinking up a good excuse and then
finding that you do not need to make
it.
WHEN A MAN’S DISCOURAGED.
When a man’s discouraged, then
He needs grass and trees and sky
More than he needs fellow men
Who give him sigh for sigh;
Needs to see that fortune’s flings
Have no influence on things.
Trees, and roses in the dew.
Vines that chuckle into bloom
Lift the man that’s feeling blue
Right out of the depths of gloom,
Show him that the hand of fate
Loosens, if we only wait.
Life has lessons for us all,
But the greatest ever learned
Is, no matter what befall,
Things keep growing, unconcerned;
Things that have to grow, they grow
In the meanest winds that blow!

That the world’s against it! No,
It knows that it has to grow.
Even weeds turn to the sun
Just as other things that grow,
Looking up for light and fun
And forgetting care and woe.
And they never look in vain,
Spite of driving wind and rain.
When a man’s discouraged, he
Don’t want folks that sympathize;
What he wants is grass and tree
And the courage of the skies.
Things that have to grow, they crow
In the meanest winds that blow!
