“where we are at.” So we could fall off, day or night, in case we see a collision is imminent. Now, what is their hope of reward in making this great sacrifice? Isn’t it the “al mighty dollar” plus more dollars?- financial economy. Results: A collision, lives lost, many cripples among the passeng rs —men, women and children. A dis charged crew for failing to apply this supplementary rule. The fact is ad vertised that a certain employe, or em ployes, was found to be at fault, and discharged. The panacea is appli d. and we meet smiling officials spinning about in their automobiles, in the r carriages, or addressing some meet ing—giving advice as to how to do your duty. Enough of that. A Berlin paper, speaking of the protest of a “high standing officer > in the United States navy against discrimination against enlisted men in uniform at dances and in j theatres,” says that the ground ’ taken by German army and navy \ officers is “more reasonable and ' less sentimental,” and cites the case of two members of the reserve for, e who, returning from target practice I in uniform, went to a dancing saloon, where they were found dancing by an officer. “The officer did not make inquiry as to how many girls had re fused to dance with the uniformed men, neither did he look for floor managers who might have object id ■ to the presence of the soldiers. Ou the contrary, the men were arrested and were each sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.” An interesting authority says that in the so-called “glorious” vietoiies of Caesar, a million men perished on the field of battle. Napoleon, in the short space of nine years, was auth orized to devote to “the glory of France” 2,103,000 of her sons, main tains the Memphis News-Scimitar. Seventy persons have been killed and over 200 injured, more or less, in wrecks on tiie Southern Pacific railroad during the last five months.
