Democracy in a l*ad Way! Tlw Malison (Wisconsin) Patriot, a zealous Democratic paper, has drawn the following picture of its own party, in that State, which will he found not a bad likeness of the. pie-bald Bogus Walker Kansas party of this latitude: “ Why is our party to day on its knees before the worl I? It re piitvsno sooth sayer or sorcerer to answer that quos tiou. The party has played with edge tools, tis dull as old hoes at that—and has got cut ; it has flirted with’political cyprians and got jilted; it has slept with pilfering shavers, scoundrels and knaves, and has caught the barber’s itch. It has breathed the pestilential malaria fuming from the lairs of old, rotten, unprincipled, scurvv-headcd, milk-and-water, broken down, cast oflj leprous pukes, cancerous thieves, superanuated pickpockets, trea sury plundering, refuse office-seeking, whisky-soaked, double distilled buffoons and penitentiary scaliwags, who have preyed and gorged on the party and peo ple until the substance of each is almost exhausted, and they look as lean, lank, thin, savage and cadaverous as starved hyenas confined in the Dismal Swamp of terror and adversity, through a thousand eternities of snow, sleet, hail, rain, fhuii der, lightning, tempests and irretrievable famine.” Small Business. —The Griffin l nion says that the Brown Democrats in the pay of the State Road, are making themselves quite merry over the fact of a conductor’s having cheated B. 11. Hill out of so small a sum as twenty-five cents. This is doubtless a small swind ling transaction for a State Road opera tor, but it may be that it was the best that could be done, under the circumstan ces—the largo jobs in that department of business being given over to more expe rienced hands! With the encourage ment offered him, however, wo should not be surprised if the 25 cent nmn at tained to great proficiency in larger transactions ! The difficulty in Mr. R. P. Burnett’s case seems to be not that In aspired too low, but that not getting what he demanded, he took what he could get; for the true statement, which his over partial friends avoid giving is, that he first tried to make Mr. Hill pay TWO DOLLARS, tllCll ONE DOLLAR AND A half, and finally cheated him, as our neighbor jocularly terms it “out of a quarter of a dollar.” This is a small business for Democracy we must confess —ridiculously in contrast with the great Kansas swindle, or the Altoona contract! But then Mr. Burnett was nothing but a “tram hand,” and with a little more en couragement and experience may yet rise to the dignity of a first class contrac tor, and succeed in cheating the people of the State out of as many thousands of dollars as ho did Mr. Ilill out of cents!” According to Democratic logic, the amount of the theft qualifies the honesty or dishonesty of the transaction. With some of the Brown Editors, there is a material difference in principle, between swindling a man out of 25 cents, and de frauding him out of 25 dollars ! Saga cious moralists! Can’t they perceive that a man who has a disposition to steal a “ quarter,” would not be likeiy to bog gle at a few thousand, if he had the op portunity ! The “Locum Tenens” of the Telegraph. —ln the absence rs the Proprietor and Editor of the Telegraph, we understand that his place is filled by that enthusiastic Walker-Buchanan politician, Col. Wm. K. DeGraffenried. The public will thus be able to know what reliance is to be placed on the lucubrations which appear in that sheet, editorially, to-morrow. There will doubtless be a good deal of gas, considerable self glorification and precious little sound political doctrin e to be th<*re found- To “give the d*vll his due,” the Col. onel is a gentleman of remarkably fertile imagination and prurient fancy in the matter of political statistics Witness the late article which gives six Congressional Districts, certain, for the Democracy, and mikes two the 3rd and 7th, a “stand off.” This beats Mamchau gm Ml hollow, but we may expect still greater amplifi cation pf romance, In the next issue of the paper, over which he has temporary control. Look out for to-mor row’s Telegraph. If you wish to see sights ! ARRIVALS AT BROWN'S HOTEL. MACON. September 27, 1857. v p Clark.
