An Attachment.
We have heard a good story, of which an
Alabama Sheriff was the hero:
Court was in session, and amid the multi
plicity of business which crowded upon him he
called the door of a beautiful widow on the sun
ny side of 30, who, by the way, had often bes
towed melting glances upon the aforesaid Sher
iff He was admitted, and the widow soon ap
peared ; the confusion and delight which tie
arrival of iier visitor occasioned set off to great
er advantage than usual the captivating charms
of the widow M —. Her cheeks bore the
beautiful blended tints of the apple blossom ;
here lips resembled the rose buds, upon which
the morning dew yet lingered, and her eyes
were dike the quiver of Cupid ; the glances of
love and tenderness with which they were filled
resembled arrows, that only wanted a beau
(pardon the pun) to do full execution.
“Madam,” said the matter of fact Sheriff, “I
have aibattachment for you.”
A deeper blush than usual mantled tJie cheek
of the fair widow ; with downcast eyes, whose
glances were centured upon her beautiful foot,
which was half concealed by her flowery dra
pery, gently patted the floor, she with equal
candor replied:
“Sir, the attachment is reciprocal ”
For some time the Sheriff maintained an as
tonished silence; at length he said, “Madam,
you will proceed to Court.”
“Proceed to court?” replied the lady, with
a merry laugh, then shaking her head, she
said ••
“No sir I though this is leap year, I will not
take advantage of the license therein granted
to my sex, and therefore greatly prefer that
you proceed to coubt 1”
“ But madam, the Justice is waiting.”
“ Let him wait; lam not disposed to hurry
matters in so unbecoming a manner, and be
sides, sir, when the ceremony is performed, 1
wish you to understand I greatly prefer a min
ister ton Justice.”
A light dawned upon the Sheriff's brain.
“Madam,” said he, rising from the chair
with solemn dignity, “there is a great mistake
here; my language has been misunderstood ;
the attachment of which I speak was issued
from the office of Squire C., and commands me
to bring you immmediately before him, to an
swer a contempt of court in disobeying a sub
poena in the case of Smith vs. Jopes!”

—The young man who leaves the farm field for
the merchant’s desk, or the lawyer’s or doctor’s
office, thinking to dignify or ennoble his toil,
makes a sad mistake. He passes, by th i1 step
from independence to vassalage. He barters a
natural for an unnatural pursuit, and he must
be the slave of the caprice of customers and
the chicane of trade, either to support himsel
or acquire a fortune. The more artificial a
man’s pursuit, the more debasing is it morally
and physically. To test it, contrast the mer
chant’s clerk with the plowboy. The former
may have the more exterior polish, but the lat
ter, under his rough outsida, possesses the truer
stamina. He is the freer, franker, happier, and
nobler man. Would that our young men might
judge of the dignity of labor by Its usefulness
and manliness, rather than by the auperficiiJ
glosses it wears. Therefore we never see u
man’s nobility in his kid gloves and toilet ad
ornments, but in that sinewy arm, whose out
lines, browned by the sun, betoken a hardy,
honest toilet, under whose farmer’s or mechan
ic’s vest the kingliest heart may beat.—[Hunt’s

Every man should take a newspa]>er, and pay
for it without the least shadow of a doubt—i*
