The Brunswick Murder. — Tho authori ties of Brunswick have written here requesting that the negro, Csesar Dunham, who, about throe weeks ago was arrested in this city, upon the charge if having six weeks previously murdered another negro named Sambo James, be kept in confinement in the couaty jail uatll his trial In September. Tan Board of Health.—The regular meeting of the Bo.ird of Health will be held on lues day nigh;, next, that ii, if there be a quorum. As our air is so pure that neither cholera nor yellow fever c m exist iu it; and 33 garboge and unclean streets and lanes cannot the health of Savannah as they do olher cities, therefore we, like the miijoriJ.y of the members of tho Board of Health, do no see the necessity ol holding a meeting every week. The Drunken Policeman Caught asd Punished.—The News and Herald, of Monday last stated that on the Saturday afternoon previous a member of the City Police, in uniform and far gone under the influence of liquor, staggered up to a largo negro woman quietly sitting iu a doorway near the corner of Brough-on street lane and Habersham street and told her that she was bis prisoner and mast go with him to the Barracks, at the sam6 time oatching hold of her and dragging her along. She resisted, and finally, seeing that he was bent upon carrying hsr to prison without authority, knocked him down and escaped. He then arrested a negro man, who also got away. The policeman men commenced tc cavort around aud make himsell a nuisance tj all persons in that neighborhood. A policeman came up in a few moments and carried him off. The authorities a’ certained that the policeman re ferred to was named Daugherty aud arrested him. He was arraigned before tbe Mayor Saturday morn log. Rachel McGee, the negro woman above mentioned, was introduced as a witness, and testified that the Policeman had done as stated, told her, “God d—-n you, come along; you’ve got to goto the guard house,’’ had then pull9f along, and pulled her, dragged her, squeezed her against the wall, thrown her, stript her in the street, soul tor his pistol, which was brought to him, and threatened to kill her. Daugherty made his statement; after which tho Mayor announced that he should be fined tweniy dollary and pay for the damage done to Rachel’s dress. Roiv Between VVliites unci Segroe. at St. AugurUnc, Florida— Several Persons Wounded. From a private let.er received herefrom Bt. Au gustine, Florida, we learn that on the 16th instant a riot occurred there between tho whites aud negroes, which resulted in several whiles and negroos being severely injured. It appears that on the day mentioned t hero was a misr meeting of the Conservative party, and air. N. Call addressed tho meeting and rasped the carpet baggers and negroes. Alter the meeting there was a barbecue at Mr. Duncan’s place, and at night a torchlight procession in town. Tue negroes became somewhat excited during Ihe day, being stirred up bytheprirato harangU.'S of the carpet baggers, aud »t night also turned out In opposition to tho whites, all of the negroos bring armed. The two processions met ou St. George s Btreot and some words ensued which resulted in a general riot. The whites, with few exceptions, were unarmed. Mr. William Hernandez was struck with a club right across the eyes and knocked senseless. A Conserva tive negro named Tony Foutain had one of his eyes nearly knocked out. One Radical negro received a shot in the thigh, and another a shot iu the lower part of the leg. Mr. Emory, who was on a visit to the town, was shot in the thigh, aud others were slightly Injured. The soldiers wire ordered out under arms and quelled the disturbance, but not before several ol them had been hurt by the negroes. One soldier was struck across the head with a club aud severely injured. MsyoFs Court. Mayor E. C. Andehson, Presiding. Saturday, August 22, 1668. Tho docket this morning consisted of six cases, three of which were first callod as follows : H. Bradyhouse, H. M. Roberts and Julia Brown. The two men were soldiers ot ‘‘Uncle Bam,’’ and Julia a mulatto girl. The oharges against them was enter ing the premises of a citizen without Bis permission, between eleven and twelve o'cbok, Friday night. From the testimony, It appears that the cook em ployed by the family permits mulatto girls to come there and occupy rooms with such males as they can “ring in 1 ’ from off the streets. The whole party was fined thirty dollars each. Jnlia Johnson and Delta Siymour, negro girls, were arraigned to answer* ' “ Hiv obscene language In the street. They were’* ’ “ *" dollars each ; in default of payment to be confined ten Sara in jail. Julius Demons, negro, was up to answer for being a suspicious character. Julius Is some black, which may be accounted for from the faot that he was an unwilltug visitor from Afrioa to the Southern States only a short ti ne previons to the late unpleasant ness between the Northern and Southern seoilons of this “glorious Union.’’ He was turned over to Lieut. Wray lor investigation. Attempted Robbery.— On Saturday morn ing last, about one o’clock, as a printer residing in tho western part of the city had reached home and was preparing to retire, he heard a noise at the rear of his house. Another typo, boarding with him, who had but a short time previously gone to bed and was not ye’ asleep, Baw a negro on the shed at a second story window, attempting to force an entrance. The man of the house seised his dubble-barreled gun and pulled trigger on tbe burglar. The gun, having been loaded for some time, the first barrel missed fire. The second attempt was more successful, and the load took effeot on the negro, who either fell or jumped Into the yard, crying out that he was shot. Before the inmates ol the house oould reach the yard, he had scaled the fence and escaped. Unfortunately the gun was only loaded with bird shot, so tLat the wounds indicted were not serious. The people in that vicinity, having been so often annoyed by depredators, have generally armed them selves, and now invite nocturnal visitations from any prowling scoundrel who is desirous of making him self a subject for a coroner's inquest, or a deposit for a good load of shot. The Base Ball Match Game,— Tbe Base Ball match between the Oglethorpes, of Savannah, and tho Excelsiors, of Augusta, commenced at the Parade Ground yesterday afternoon. Quito a large number of persona, Including several ladies, taking the threatening appearance of the weather, into con sideration, were present. Five “innings” were played, when the rain caused them to adjourn nniii to-morrow (Monday) afternoon at 3 o’clock, when the game will bo resumed, at which time the ladies are especially invited and expected to be present. Considerable Interest was manifested in the contest, and both parlies played with great spirit and energy. The Oglethorpe Club were “entertained” at the Vigilant engine house yesterday evening In a very pleasant little re*nniou. They will leave for Savannah to-morrow (Monday; evening —Augusta Chronicle of yesterday. Delay of the Tonawanda’— We learn that the steamship Tonawanda, which loft this port tor Philadelphia on Saturday morning, when near Cock spur, broke the straps of her eccentric rod, The atrapß from a leas important part were removed and were about to be atti.chod, when it was found that the rod itself was broken. Bulger St 00. welded the rod, and made other necessary repairs, and the parly left at twelve o’clock on Saturday night. By daylight yesterday morning everything was fixed up and the ship resumed her voyage. This detention will delay her arrival In Philadelphia, but the fact has been telegraphed to the agents there, so that no anxiety will bo felt if she does not coma in on her usual schedule time.
