LOCAL DEPARTMENT.
FRIDAY MJRN'INO, OCTOBER th, 18TIS.
*
—Dr. J. W. Anslcy has gone to
Macon to rep’enish his stock.
—Mrs. Drane’s little daughter,
who has been quite sick during tbo
part few is rapidly recovering*
—We understand that the Buena
Yista Bar have petitioned Judge
Crawford to postpone the
Court of Marion county, so that the
people can attend the State Fair.
—We deeply regret that Deputy
Sheriff D, A. Maddox has been
stricken with paralysis. We hope he
will bo relieved and appearjagain on
our streets in a few days.
—Divine services were held in Ha
mah Church, Frimitiye, Baptist, in
this place, on Sunday last. Batriah
is probably the oldest Church in this
entire section.
—Several advertisements appear
in this issue. Read them, one and
all, and remember to trade with the
merchants who advertise —they are
the men who are helping you support
your county paper,
—See the very interesting and
timely communication on our first
page, in regard to Home Trade. Our
contributor will favor us with an ar
ticle for our next issue, on the Job
bing trade.
—Rev. J. 0. Branch, so well and
favorably known throughout this
section of country, and pastor of one
of the Methodfst chifreSSs' of Colum
bus, will preach at the Methodist
church in Buena Vista, on next Sab
bath.
—During the absence of the editor
a meeting of some prominent citizens
of Buena Vista was had to consider
the Educational interest of tire place
and to inaugurate steps for the secu
ring a corps of teachers for next
year.
Mr. Lowe, of the firm of Lowe Sc
Rnshin. has returned from a recent
visit to Charleston, witfna large stock
of dry goods, &c, which are offered
at Columbus and Araericns prices.
Read the firm’s advertisement and
then go for the goods, with the cash.
—We will pnblish a sketch of our
trip to Columbus, in ou: next issue.
The press of other important matter,
the crowded state of our advertising
columns, and the space occupied by
valuable communications, prevent
our remembering our Columbus
friends in to-day’s Argus, They are
billed for our next,
—The Fortieth Annual Session of
the Chattahoochee United Free Will
Baptist Association will commence on
itext Friday with Pleasant Hill
ohurch, Schley countv. Ekler A. M.
Stewart to preach the introductory
sermon, and Elder C. C. Martin his
alternate. Delegates coming up the
S. W. R. R. will stop at Oglethorpe,
and those ceming down the road, will
stop at Biitlcr. Conveyances will
be in attendance at both place3.
Good Corn Yield.—Mr. H. T.
Hollis, of this county, has, fifteen
acres of bottom land on his planta
tion, which yielded this year forty
bushels of corn to the acre. Had the
seasons been favorable, he believes
that it would have yielded fifty bush
els or more to the acre. This is what
Marion county bottoms can do, when
seasons are good,

Stolen^— Mr. Ciias. Bradshaw,
li.ingln the Pino Desert, in this
county, >d a fat ox stolen out of his
pasture on Wednesday night last:
In the same community, on the same
night, a colored man, named Ben
Johnson, also lost a fine fat ox stolen.*
The proper authorities should look
afterl this matter. The prevalence
Of roguery in that community, is be
coming alarming.
We understand that these thieves
have been traced through Buena
Vista. v
-1520 to the Ear.—We were
shown recently by Mr. Thos. L
Bfljfy" near a euri
osity-igrowtv on his plan taction . It
was an ear of i mlian corn having
thirty-eight full Vows, the rows av
eraging, forty grains each—some
going up aa. ,Liglr as iii’ty. Jkk
makes a total of fifteen hundred and
twenty* grain of corn Jo the oar.
" ’"''Hr, Rogers assured us his
porn produced many ears like this.
Jrite ears are so large that thev ean
’hbt he shelled through an,ordinary
fjorn shgller.

3 Peacock. —Thu angel of death vis
ited the family of Mr. Thompson Pea
cock, and took away the pride and
joy of the household. Little Byron
Peacock, a bright boy of about seven
years, died ou Saturday night laßtof
a congestive chill. He was buried iu
the Buena Vista cemetery on Sun
.day,
WtlkiXS.—Mrs. Minerva Wilkins,
consort of Mr.'Wilfiam wilkins, re
siding in the northern portion of this
county, died on Saturday night last,
lamented by her family, who loved
her dearly and by many friends and
acquaintances by whom she was
greatly esteemed. She was the
daughter of Mr. John ICemp, deceas
ed, who was a citizen of this county.
Iter remains were interred in the
family hurrying ground, on Sunday
following.
We extend to the respective fami
lies of the deceased our condolence
and sympathy.
Roads.
If reports, relative to mads in the
Kineltafoonee district of this county, be
true, travelers mutt have rough jolt rigs
on some of them. A gentleman re
marked, on Saturday, that two of three
wagons, last Week, loaded with cot
ton, going to Columbus, not being
able to maintain a proper centre o(
gravity, wire forced to accept a hori
zontal posilion. These accidents hap
pened in lets than eight miles from
this place.
It may bo amusing to some people
to laugh at frightened tcamnters and
muddied clothing, but we imagine
there is no amusement for a farmer to
see bis wagon broken or a valuable an
imal injured or ruined because of bad
roads, aDd it may be properly asked
whether the highways have been prop
erly worke-i, especially when such ac
cidents happen this far from market
so early iu the season.
It is not the quantity of work, but
the manner in which it should bo done,
that keeps roads in good condition. A
littl3 thought will often suggest some
thing more than tilling up a bole or
gully. Every hoe full of dirt should be
so placed as to be of permanent bene
fit and not to be washed awap by the
first rain.
A Marion County Snake.
Mr. J. J. McDowell, residing at
Thorntonville, in this county, has in
bis possession the skin of probably the
largest rattlesnake ever killed in this
count*, £The snake was discovered,
near his residence, and was first at
tacked by a dog. One strike inject
ed its deadly virus, and the dog died
in great agony ten minutes after.
Mr. McDowell shot the snake twice
before it received its death wound.
Its skin required a bushel and a half
of cotton seed or bran to fill it, being
in length six feet and two inches.
Thirteen rattles adorned its tail. An
account of this big snake's capture
and death has been in print before,
as it occurred in the summer. We
give it for the benefit of our readers
who have not read it.
We once saw a man who was pas
sionately fond of rattlesnake flesh,
well prepared in the ordinary man
nerof preparing wild game. If the
thieves, who infest Fine Desert, will
turn their attention from hogs and
cattle to'rattlesnakes and other rep
tiles, an appreciative public will be
highly gratified. If a few suffer the
fate of tlie dog, so much the better—
we know; several; good citizens, who
would be glad, to attend their funer
als.
—
Blindness from SgiiE Eyes.—Mr.
W. C. Glaze, or thl3 County; has been
afflicted with sore eyes for qbout two
months, which ha3 terminated in
almost total blindness inoni and par
tial blindness in the other eye. Thin
should not only remind us of the im
portance of applying active remedies
in the early stages of this disease,
but impress us with the dangers of
indifference or delay. How dark the
world is to one of such blindness.
—Cotton is being ni|.udiy carrot
to Columbus and Americus from th s
county. A large portion also goes to
Geneva. Cotton was selling in Ge
neva yesterday at 10 Jc for the beat.

Wo desire to correct the report, eirculnt s
by the stockholders and managers of the o
called Grange Warehouse, to wit: That our
Warehouse is a branch house of Messrs-
Harold, Johnson & Cos. business, and that the
combination is for the purpose of breaking
down the Grange Warehouse. We deny the
aspersion and pronounce it false. Trusting
that a simple denial is sufficient to correct
the xeport and reprove the authors of it, we
are Respectfully,
