LOCAL DEPARTMENT.
FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 'J2J, 1875.
—Large numbers of our citizens
visited llie Fair this week. We
will probably have a thrilling letter,
describing it, in our next issue. It
is no doubt a grand success.
Owing to the fact that many of
our citizens were anxious to attend
the State Fair this week, his Honor.
Judge Martin J. Crawford, rushed
business through with all possible
speed. The Court adjourned Wednes
day at noon.
—Clayton Thompson, a white man,
living in this county, was sentenced
ny the last Court to three years in
Mn3 penitentiary, for hog stealing.
The hogs were stolen on the 31st of
May last, from a colored man named
Pink Wiggins.
—We have been examining Hie
prices of dry goods in this town and
find them as cheap and good as those
of Aniericus, Albany, Cuthbert and
Columbus, Messrs. Lowe A Bushin
have an immense stock of goods, and
they are anxious to sell them.
—Our sincerest thanks arc due and
are hereby returned for the efforts of
our friends in securing the Argo ;
subscriptions and advertisements. It
is through their efforts that our pa
per lias secured so large a circula
tion in so short a time.
When a Missouri engineer ditch
ed his train, he faintly asked:
‘Did it kill any one who parted his
hair in the middle ? They answer
ed that three such were lying dead.
‘Then I die P he sighed, and was
soon no more.
Would you believe it? Nice, well
-developed, juicy, and rose tinted
peaches on-4 he fourteenth day of
October! On that day we had the
gratification of partaking of ripe
peaches, which at this late season
is a rare luxury. They were sent to
ns with the compliments of Mr. P.
S v Ntevens, who will please accept
our acknowledgement for the
same.
There is a man in this county who
rejoices in the possesion of a tayty
buzzard. He wanteij. to pay Ills
subscription with him, but#ye were-''
compelled to decline, as tjrf -Mayor
would not hire the birdie's a
scavenger. We can't -taftfe wild

The Wild White Man cf Marion.
The citizens of the Southern por

but seldom in broad opeivlay light

A fewgdays ago, tho citizens of
the county, living on tho line of

Cmr.i.s. —From several sections of
the county, reports reach us that
chilis prevail. They are not general,
but arc very severe anil difficult to
manage. With this exception, the
health of tho county was never bet
ter.
Finio Crop.— Col. M. If. Illnndford,
of Columbus, said, on Wednesday
last, that Marion has a larger and
better crop of Sugar canc this year
than any county he lias visited. Good
for Marion.
Money Stolen. —Last week a ne
gro, by tlie nameof Joe Johnson, was
arrested and brought to jail, on the
charge of stealing one hundred and
fifty dollars, from a colored woman
in this county who had been laying
up money for the purpose of purcha
sing herself a homo. After a thor
ough investigation no case was made
out. and on motion the matter was
dismissed from court.
Death by lleub Doctoring —ln
Talbotton a negro man had been un
der the treatment of a negro doe
tress, for some time. Hie as, here
tofore, been regarded as a good and
well intentioned woman. On Sunday
last she administered to him a dose
ofinedieine, of her own preparation,
alter which lie began to grow worse,
and continued to do so until k lie died
on Monday. A post mortem exami
nation has furnished evidence that
the compound adaunDLcred was pois
onous, and produced the death. This
news was secured for us by a friend
on the way to the Fair.
Correction.— Our issue of Friday
last erred in announcing that Dev.
W. W. Stewart would preach in this
town on Monday night after the
first Sunday in November. It should
have stated that he wuuld preach
here on Monday night after the fifth
Sunday in this month. Bro. Stewart
is dearly beloved by the Methodists
of this section, and a large congrega
tion will no doubt greet him, on Mon
day night week.
Frost.— The weather has bee if
quite cool for tho past eight or_ ten
days, aud winter clothing, overcoats,
shawls and warm fires have keen
greatly in demand. On Sumlay and
Monday nights last hea*y frosts pre
vailed,in the county. --Cotton, pota

the “<ft>rn” and grounded their leafy
banners at tlie.cdfn maud of Hie hoary

nation convened their Annual Asso
ciation, at Pleasant Hill Church, in
Schley county, and held a pleasant
and harmonious session last week.
OONVICTEJ CF CATTLE STEAL
INO.
In our lust issue we gave Hie par
ticulars of the stealing of two oxen
from Mr. Charles Bradshaw and Ben
Johnson, by Jeff Livingston and
James Tnylor, as it was elicited at
tho commitment trial. They weie
tried this week by the Superior Court
found guihy and sentenced to three
years in the penitentiary.
The prosecution brought forth an
array <>t testimony, whirl) was incon
trovertible. The defense brought in
no rebutting testimony, and made no
attempt whatever to clear the priso
ners of the crime, as such efforts
would have been altogether useless.
The prisoners plead guilty to the
charge and cast themselves upon the
mercy of the Court. Toting Living
ston made confession in a most affect
ing manner, and the counsel labored
ffrrd for mercy, doing all in their
power for the accused.
The case closed about noon Tues
day, and the jury brought in a ver
dict of guilty. After dinner, the
Judge sentenced them to three years
servitude in the penitentiary.
The prisoners were quite young
men, neither ot them having attain
ed their majority. Livingston de
clared that bad company,—that of
lewd and profligate women—had led
him into the commission of this
crime. We are truly sorry for botii
young men, but they deserve their
fate.
Tho injury that these profligate,
Cyprian women are doingtothc com
munity is ten times greater than that
done by cow-thieves. If there is any
law extant, by which tin i • crimes may
be vis ted upon them, every effort
should be put forth to lodge them in
the penitentiary or on tho gallows.
MATRIMONIAL.
-On Sunday evening last a pleasant
courtship culminate and in the marriage
of Mr. IT. Stevens. Jr., to Miss Addic
Baker, daughter ot Dr. J. L. Baker,
all of this town. The ceremony was
performed by Dev. IV. J. Mitchell, of
the Baptist Church. No cards.
, After the ceremony, the hapj y
bride aud happier bridegroom sped
away from Buena Vista, on their way
to--the State Fair, where t’-cy have
spent the week, in that blissful

A Prolific Potato-
Mr. G. YT. C. Mnnro brought into

a superior variety of potatoes,
which has been given the name of
“Mnnro’s Prolific.” Tho sample

pitious for the rapid growth and
deve' -pcnient of potatoes. These
pota -es are said to produce at the
rate of seven hundred and ninety
bushels to tho acre. They are ve.

well; they are also very- palatable,
being cqyal in this respect to the
common yam. Sec the certificate
