sltc §ucuu Iteta LOCAL DEPARTMENT. FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 20th, 1875. —A disease, similar to the opizoo ty, is spreading among the horses of Marion county. On Saturday last ive noticed several suffering from it. Care should betaken that those nt affected with it be kept from contact with those that are. —Our citizens Lave returned from the Fair, somewhat disappointed. From all accounts, it must have been considerably inferior to the Fairs of previous years. —Rev. W. J. Short, of this coun ty, occupied the Methodise pulpit in Buena Vista, on Sunday morning. His sermon was practical and well timed, and was listened to with ear nest attention. —lt would be greatly to the inter est of the merchants of Geneva to give the Argus a liberal patronage. A farmer, who plants extensively, informed us that he liked Win. 0. Paschal’s advertisement, and intend ed making it a point to sell him all of his cotton. The planter was not personally acquainted with Mr. Pas chal, but through the influence of that small advertisement, he will sell him as many as fifty or more bales. In securing thi -one customer, Mr. Paschal has made a heavy per cent, on the cost of the advertisement. —A Marion county hog recently followed a wagon to Columbus, slept with it all night, and followed the driver about the streets, just as a dog would follow its owner. How is this for a domestic hog ? —Talk about Marion county coni, Marion county potatoes, and Marion county rattlesnakes ! That is not all that some Marion county farmers raise in abundance. There is one in the Glen Alta community who has been the father of seventeen children. He has nine daughters at home, and it takes over a hundred yards of cal ico to go round. Worse than that (or perhaps better), another is the happj sire of twenty-three children. How is that on children ? Next 1 —Mr. N. T. Fowler is agent for the Buena Vista Argus, and is duly authorized to receive and receipt for subscriptions to the same. We hope that ail who want a good paper, who cannot see us, wiil give him their names with the money. He is work ing for an institution that needis help. We are doing all we can to aid it, and we sincerely desire the public to do likewise. —We notice witli pride that our young men are laboring in a good cause, and the young ladies are en couraging them as well as they can. Even the Judge seems inclined to drop out of single harness. —Just think of a city a hundred ami eighty thousand years old ! Read the article on the outside, under the title of “Prehistoric America.” —There is no doubt existing in our mind but that Buena Vista is one of the healthiest towns in the State of Georgia. —Do you suppose that this place is going down ? Just undeceive your self a little by calling in at Mr. M Hair’s, and pricing his new goods. —We have one of the most orderly towns anywhere, and it is owing to the fact that we have a Town Coun cil that is not to be excelled by any Council we have yet had the pleasure of meeting up with. —Farmer, you know to your sor row, that you Lave been getting poorer for several years past. You know, also, that this has been caused by buying your supplies, at high pri ces, from the Western market. The best plan is to raise your supplies at home. Next week, we have been told, is the best time to sow small grain. Our advice is, sow plenty of it. If you don’t mind, being busy getting your cotton ready for market, you will neglect it, and you may b ffer seriously from such. neglect, jiext summer. PUBLIC MEETING CALLED. To Discuss tho School Qiestion. The chairman of the Board Of Tms • toes of tho Rucna Viita Academy, requests us to announce that a pub lic meeting will bo held in the Court House, on Tuesday evening next, at 3 o’clock for the purpose of taking the educational interests of Buena Vista and vicinity into consideration. Several important matters connected with the school will ho brought be fore the meeting, and a full attend ance is earnestly desired. The citizens of Buena Vista and vicinity, especially the patrons of the school, are invited to come out to the Court House on Tuesday evening next, at 3 o’clock, and take a per sonal interest in tho business to be brought before that meeting. The educational interests are un doubtedly the most important that can be brought before this communi ty, because it affects the welfare of the rising generation, the future cit izens of the county. In the educa tion of the children rests the future weal or woe of the country. Committed- A knife which cuts both ways is a dangerous tool. Principles are some times more hurtful in their charac teristic wanderings, than double edged knives, and often the thrust in tended to injure an accused party, in being warded off, is made to inflict a life-long injury to the person giv ing the thrust. Such was the case on last Monday with a Mr. Eldridge Wilson a colored gent whose freedom and civil rights had been ignored, as he affirmed, by a Mr. James Mathis a white man, by bestowing upon his (Wilson’s - ) lord ships back a sound thrashing. The case seems to be this. On or about the 30tli of August last, when Mr. Mathis was absent from home, on business, Mr. Wilson, feeling his civil greatness, and social value, de cided to enter the room of Mrs. Math is and then and there asserted his privi-leges by committing anassauit with intent to rape. The next day, on the return of Mr. Mathis his moth er informed him of the ofiense and the party commit ing it. Whereup on Mathis in company wit’u ano.her gentleman, started in search of the midnight prowler, with a view of ta king him to an officer, whose duty it was to safely keep him until he could be tried. They came upon him when he refused to be arrested, and re ceived a few heavy blows with a stick. But these only increased his determination of escape, and he got away. They followed until he was overtaken again at Dr. McMichael’s where he was retaken and started back to Buena Vista. On the way here, while all the party except Mr. Mathis and his criminal, were at dinner at Mr. Irwin Jordans, the guilty wreicli, fearing the terrors of the law, proposed to Mr. Mathis that if he (Mathis) alone would whip him (Wilson) and be satisfied, and not enforce the laws against him, that he might whip him as much and as long as he wanted, if it amounted to one thousand lashes. Wilson fur ther agreed that after taking the whipping he would leave the State. All the parties after consultation, decided that it would be Letter for the criminal, Mathis and his family to accept the culprit’s proposition. And the judgment was executed in stantly. Wilson complied with his part of the self proposed arrange ment, until recently when having been perhaps upbraided for degrad ing unmanlincss, determined to at tone for the self imposed degration, by having Mathis arrested. Mathis was therefore tried on Monday, and Dound over under a bond of $l5O. Judge Butt counsel for the defense finding abundant evidence against the wicked d.ffamer, and having seen his perjury in seveial points on the stand, asked tho court to hold him until lie could write out a war i ant for his arrest. The court refu sing to hold him a sufiicieut time Judge Butt on his own motion order ed the bailiff to hold him. He wa s arrested and arraigned before Ids Honor .Judge Butt, who sent him to jail in default of Bond, until Satur day at 10 oclok A. M. when his case will be heard. Business Outlook.
