t |Jouno §?NpU. FKRRT WYNKKI.B, WRITTBH fOR THE BUENA VISTA AIKIUa SQ&KK? ££s3S > BT JOHN 47. OOWSON. CnAPTSH 11. No sooner had the boat reached the wharf, and daylight was fully come, than Johnny stepped oIT the boat, and walked up into the city, and wandered about from street to street not knowing what iu the world to do. Poor little Johnny! Without any friend in the world, bereftof his only protector, alone in a strange city, he was indeed desolate. At last he came to a harness ma ker's shop, and seeing the man in there at work, he walked in and ask ed him, “Plc-isn, sir, can you tell me where j I can find my uncle John ?” “What’s his other name ?” “I don’t know, sir.” “Well i Get out! I don’t know him, and I’ve got no time to meddle with children.” Disappointed, he went his way with tears in iiis eyes. Next, ho came to a place where there was a largo round chimney, with smoke coming out at the top, l and seeing a door open, he walked ; in. There was a great deal of noise i inside, and he saw a man working at a furnace. After a while tho noise ceased, and Johnny walked up to the man and asked him the same ques ‘ on that lie had asked the harness maker. “Has your uncle any other name ?” asked the man. “I don’t know, sir.” “I can’t tell you anything about your uncle John, then,” said the man, and he resumed his work. Johnny then passed by a crowd of Bchi 01-boys. Some of them laughed at him; one of them threw his hat in the mud; while others threw pebbles t him, some of which struck him. Dinner time passed, and he was T hurt, ry, but no one spoke a kind word to him; all were indifferent or harsh. ■Cut the little fellow still persevered although he found no encouragement whatever. He told his story over and over, but it seemed to bring - no sympathy. It was nS-ar sundown, when John ny was standing near the corner of a street, that—sudd enl y—every thing seemed to dance before his eyes, and fade irom his sight. There were a pair of horses that had become frightened at some noise in the street, and running past they had trampled the poor boy under their feet, a wheel of the vehicle, to which die horses were a' tached, pass ed over his arm, and 110 lay upon the sidewalk, apparently dead. A large crowd gathered in the street, and a tall full-faced gentleman ordered some men to carry him to his residence. So that when Johnny was restored to consciousness, which was about ten o’clock at night, he found himself in a comfortable bed. [TO be continued.] The South Georgia Agricultur al and Mechanical Association held its Annual Fair at Thoinas ville last week ; our exchanges say it was, in every particular a magnificent success, eclipsing all its former efforts as well as the State Fair. The Savannah News remarks: “A unique feature of the Thomas ville Fair, and one of the most in teresting, is the display made by the different Granges of Thomas and adjoining counties. The ri valry between these organizations lias been friendly but sharp, and the result is one of the largest and best agricultural displays ever made in the State. Two of these we are told~and perhaps others —each occupy an entire building, so numerous and so va ried are the products the have entered. The introduction of this feature was an exceedingly happy tliought upon the part of the oili cers of the association, and it is one, xve predict, which will be pretty generally imitated in the future.’” A mammoth steer from Oregon is already en route for the Centennial. It stands nineteen hands, or six font four inches, measures twenty feet from tip to tip, and weighs 5,000 pounds. Ilcnj. F.
