Today: A 'present' from above
BY SHERRY LEWIS
Today has a perfect name-—the present. Each and every
day is a present from God.
The question to ponder as we begin this New Year is
what are we going to do with this gift?
In Psalms 118:24, we read, “This is the day which the
Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
As I meditate on that verse, I must confess that I get
caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and let
life just pass me by without much thought. I also admit
that I’d like to do things a little different this year.
Personally, I’d linger over a fresh cup of coffee with
my husband. Maybe I’d roll down the window at the
hint of spring, and let the wind rush through my hair
and I wouldn’t even care how it looked when I arrived at
my destination. Next, I’d just take a moment to breathe.
Sometimes I run from one place to another without
thought of my surroundings. So, again, I take a moment
and inhale.
From my past experience, I know how quickly life can
change. I remember one summer evening almost like it
was yesterday. I pulled into the driveway of my parent’s
home for a casual visit. We didn’t’ have any plans; I just
came to see them. It seemed like any old visit; one like
we’d had a hundred times before. We sat and talked for a
while and then I got into the car and left.
I remember that exit more than I remember any other exit
in my entire life. My mom walked me to the car. I loaded
everything, and gave her a quick hug and a kiss good-bye.
I can still visualize backing out into the roadway, throwing
up my hand and waving back at her as she bid me farewell.
Then I can almost hear the “beep beep” of my car as I sped
off on that sweltering, summer evening.
I know you must be thinking what’s with all these
monotonous details. I do have a justifiable answer. In less
than 12 hours, I received a telephone call that changed my
family forever. It was a friend who called and told me that
I needed to come home without delay. So I did.
I arrived to find a yard full of people and my father’s
face stood out in the crowd. When I saw him. it told the
story before anyone ever uttered a single word to me. Yes,
something was wrong. Our world had changed forever.
My mom, at the age of 48, went home to be with the Lord.
Here I am, some 21 years later, still clinging onto that
“present” as one of the most precious times in my life.
Memories of that moment remind me to live each day
to the fullest because we never know when it will be our
last. So as we begin 2008, live today like it will be your
last. Don’t do this for yourself alone, do this for the one’s
that could be left behind. Pile up on the couch with your
family, watch a movie and share a bowl of popcorn; take a
walk with someone you love; or just spend time together
doing nothing at all. Let’s make precious memories this
year, for ourselves and the ones we love.
