High school students to distribute historic preservation grant
Ten Athens-area high school students have
been charged with disbursing a total of $25,000
to deserving organizations with historic pres
ervation projects.
Created in September of 2007 and based
in the T.R.R. Cobb House in Athens, these
students comprise the third chapter of the
Watson-Brown Junior Board of Trustees. The
Thomson Junior Board of Trustees and the
Milledgeville Junior Board of Trustees rep
resent the first two chapters established. The
Thomson chapter alone has distributed over
$140,000 in historic preservation grants since
its inception in 2000. Each Junior Board
awards $25,000 in grants annually to worth
while preservation projects in their respective
coverage areas.
The Athens-area chapter’s coverage area
includes Banks, Hall, Madison, Jackson
and Barrow counties. The students them
selves evaluate grant proposals and determine
funding for each, with limited advice from
T.R.R. Cobb House Curator Sam Thomas and
Program Coordinator Shanon Hays.
The Watson-Brown Foundation, Inc. sup
ports historic preservation in part though its
Junior Board of Trustees, whose exclusive
mission is to preserve local history. This edu
cational initiative fosters civic responsibility,
heightens an appreciation of local history, and
introduces the students to the world of philan
thropy. The stated mission of the Athens-Area
Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board of
Trustees is “to seek out historic preservation
opportunities in Northeast Georgia. These
opportunities, aligned with education, include
but not are limited to, historic projects and
organizations to preserve the past for future
generations.” Generally, the Junior Board only
considers grants from “public charities,” or
those organizations that are defined in the IRS
Service Code Sections 501(c)(3), 509(c)(1),
509(a)(2), or 509(a)(3). The Junior Board does
not consider grants to individuals, religious
programs, or political or lobbying activities.
To be considered for a grant, applications
must include a Grant Cover Sheet and com
pleted narrative, including a project budget.
Projects must be for a recognized aspect of
historic preservation, or serve the goals of his
toric preservation. Grant application packets
have been mailed to historical societies, cham
bers of commerce, visitor/welcome centers,
CVB offices, and public libraries in each of
the counties in the Athens-area Junior Board
coverage area. Completed proposals should
be submitted to the Junior Board no later than
February 29, 2008, and may be mailed to the
WBF Junior Board, Athens Area Chapter,
c/o the T.R.R. Cobb House, 175 Hill Street,
Athens, Ga 30601.
For more information on the Athens-Area
Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board of
Trustees, or to obtain a grant application pack
et, please call Shanon Hays at 706-369-3514
or email Shanon at shays@trrcobbhouse.org.
