Peace walk, celebration set Sunday in Cornelia Sunday, Jan. 20, will mark the 22nd year in a row that citizens from around Northeast Georgia have gathered to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a walk for peace, community and justice. This year’s walk will begin in downtown Cornelia at the Big Red Apple, next to the historic depot, at 2 p.m. After brief words of inspiration, the walkers will proceed to the Life Center at Shady Grove Baptist Church, less than a mile away. All are invited to participate, and groups are welcome to bring banners and signs promoting peace and/or representing their organizations. The pace will be comfortable enough for young children and elders alike to participate with ease, according to organizers. Those who cannot walk are welcome to go directly to the church and welcome the parade of walkers, who will be singing all along the route. Shady Grove Church is located at 226 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Cornelia. Once at the church, there will be a celebration in music and dance, with performances by the Shady Grove Choir and dance ensemble. Joanne Steele, a folksinger and long-time peace and environmental advocate will also perform. In addition, Lt. Colonel Alfonzo Jackson of the Atlanta chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen will share his experiences of overcoming racial preju dice in the mid-1900s and the value of tolerance and working together to achieve a better world. Jackson entered the service in 1955 and served in the Navy until he retired from active service in 1973. He served aboard the USS Oriskany CVA-34 with Carrier Air Group 16, and Carrier Air Group 15 on board the USS Coral Sea CVA-43 as a member of the fighting force, serving three tours in Vietnam. Jackson’s last tour of duty was as a transport pilot for VR-30, carrying troops and supplies all over the world. He continues to serve as a search and rescuer observer with the Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. The Tuskegee Airmen were unique and highly successful in their military record and inspired revolutionary reform in the armed forces, paving the way for integration of the armed services in the U.S. The largely college-educated Tuskegee Airmen overcame the challenges of prejudice and discrimination. There will be a reception after the program. People are invited to bring snacks or desserts to share.
