Peace during the storms of life Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you not as the world giveth give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 I watched her from a distance before she wheeled right up to me and asked if she could help me. I must say I was impressed from the get go at how she maneu vered her wheelchair. I told her I’d like a haircut. At least that was my motive when I entered the beauty shop on a North Carolina roadway. By the time I left the shop that day, I felt as if I’d been in a revival ser vice of renewal. It was so strange. I was on my way home from a mountain get away and I felt impressed to get a haircut. A war waged in my mind from the moment I pulled into the parking lot and took the seemingly endless walk from my car to the door. Why in the world would I even consider stopping to let a total stranger, in another state, no less, cut my hair? I can tell you why. It’s called a God inspired teachable moment. There were several people cutting hair in the shop that day; I held my breath hoping that I would have the opportunity to sit in her chair and find out more about the incredible woman. Of course I was intrigued at the way she conducted her busi ness; but as the moments passed, I was even more impressed at the way she conducted her life. As the locks begin to fall to the floor, the tears begin to come down too. From what I remember, I think there were more tears coming from my eyes, than the woman I thought I was going to minister to. Quickly she told me her story with such preci sion; I knew she’d testi fied about it a hundred times before. She said she’d been involved in an accident and she’d lost her legs. Not only did she lose her legs, she lost her son as well. As I listened to her talk, I wanted to pity her; but there was just something about her face. She continued to tell me about her best friend; the one that sticks closer than a brother in good times and bad. Yes, she was talking about the Lord. She told me how He had comforted and sustained her in what had been the worst time in her life. Yes, I thought I was going to minister to her, but it turns out that this woman taught me a valuable lesson about life. She’s taken a situation that could have destroyed her and made it her ministry. My guess is she’s touch ing lives every time she tells her story. While she could be angry, bitter and given up, she’s risen up in the face of adversity and put her trust in God. Life is not always easy and life is not always fair, but the important thing is to hold onto the unchanging hand of God. He can give each of us peace in the midst of the storms of life. That is how she’s made it though this difficult situation and that is how each of us is going to make it through the trials and tribu lations we experience in our lives.
