Special hunting trip in memory of Charlie
A recent quail hunting
trip to a South Georgia
plantation is an annual
event of two friends, Lance
Herrin of Lake Lanier, and Dave
Cullen of New Port Richey,
Florida.
They decided to schedule these
annual hunts in memory of a
third friend of some 30 years,
Charlie Cobb, of Social Circle.
You see, all three were execu
tives with Lanier Worldwide in
Atlanta. Lance was the CEO of
it all. In January of 2006, the
threesome had planned a quail
hunt together. With a phone call
to Charlie to plan that trip, they
received the shocking news from
Charlie, that he wouldn’t be
able to make it this time.” Why,
what’s the matter” they inquired.
Charlie replied, with the bad
news that he had a brain tumor.
Charlie lived until Sept. 8th of
that year, and then went to be
with the Lord.
So, in honor of Charlie, Lance
and Dave headed to Ashburn
Hills Plantation in Moultrie
a couple of weeks ago for a
quail hunting trip. Arriving on
Monday, they settled down for
a steak supper and to watch the
LSU-Ohio State football game.
Ashburn Hills is a plantation of
some six thousand acres, with a
lodge built in the 50s.
Jerry York, the plantation man
ager, has been there some 30
years, and the guides have spent
many years directing the hunts.

pines, rolling countryside, and
many creeks.
Tuesday began at 7 each morn
ing with a knock on their door.
With coffee and orange juice in
hand, they were reminded that it
will soon be time for breakfast.
What a breakfast, grits (Georgia
ice-cream we call it) thick
bacon, country ham, eggs, and
biscuits, with pure cane syrup.
At 8:30 it is time to head to the
fields.
As Lance and Dave climbed up
into the wagon, pulled by mules,
their guide was nearby, on horse
back.
Some six hunting dogs were
eagerly awaiting their turn, in
the back of the wagon. Lance
said, it reminded him of his days
as a youngster, when he was vis
iting at his uncle KD’s place in
Douglas.
Uncle KD had some 5,000
acres, and Lance use to drive a
mule sled hauling turpentine. I
am reminded also of his story
when they were fishing in a
pond and the boat drifted into a
wasps nest. All of the occupants
went overboard, without any
hesitation.
Back to our hunt: when the
dog went on point, they would
grab their guns and head towards
the dog. After the quail were
flushed, they would fan out and
hunt for the singles. Lance was
using a 20 gauge Browning
Citori, over and under, and Dave
was breaking in his new Beretta
20 gauge, over and under.
The weather was in the 50s to
60s and around 40s in the morn
ing. Even with the cooler weath
er, they all wore Rattlesnake
chaps, just to be safe.
After the hunt, they headed
back for a lunch of fried quail
and fried chicken and of course,
finished it off with a piece of
pecan pie. A nap, and some trap
shooting in the afternoon, topped
off a perfect day. The total for
the hunting trip was some 58
birds.
Now,I will let you ask them as
to who bagged the most quail.
Of course, having to learn and
break in a new gun does make it
more difficult. Time to go home
now, and Lance said it was a
great trip, with great hosts, and a
hunt which he would highly rec
ommend. A trip taken in memory
of Charlie.

door adventures.

Middle School Basketball
BCMS girls have little trouble with Commerce
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Banks County Middle School
Lady Leopards used a complete team
performance to defeat Commerce
Middle School last week.
Coach Steven Shedd’s squad
recorded a 33-6 victory as eight
players contributed in the score-
book.
Katlin Parks was the leading scor
er in a balanced attack with eight
followed by Madison Franklin with
seven and McKenna Rylee with
six.
“This was a great win for the
team and everyone was able to
contribute to the victory,” Shedd
said. “Our offensive aggressive
ness and defensive intensity con
tinues to look good. We pressured
Commerce a lot in the first half and
played tough man-to-man defense
which really helped us pick up a lot
of turnovers.”
Taylor Kennedy finished with five
points for BCMS while Deasha
‘This was a great win for
team and everyone was able
to contribute to the victory.’
— Coach Steven Shedd
Beasley, Sarah O’Kelley and Jordan
Rogers all scored two. Madison
Porter added a free throw.
“It turned out be an impressive
win for us in the end,” Shedd said.
“We look to take this momentum
into our following games.”
Blalock pours in 20 in recent win against Commerce
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Another big performance from
Jacob Blalock helped the Banks
County Middle School boys basket
ball team record its eighth win of the
2007-08 season last week.
Blalock’s 20-point effort helped
BCMS record a 42-27 victory against
Commerce Middle School as coach
John Bertrang’s team continued its
impressive season.
“It was our third game in four days
and you could tell it,” the coach said.
“We were tired in the first half and
finally came together in the third
quarter. I’m really proud of the way
this team competes together.”
BCMS held a slim 5-4 advantage
after the first quarter as the Leopards
were making too many turnovers,
Bertrang said.
When the second quarter ended,
BCMS led 16-13.
In the third quarter, the Leopards
began to come alive and scored 18
points with Blalock leading the way
with 10. Clayton Martin also scored
four points in the quarter.
The strong third quarter gave
Bertrang’s team a 34-19 cushion
and allowed the squad to record
another win.
Blalock connected on two 3-point
ers against Commerce which gives
him 11 in the past three contests.
“We can always expect Blalock
to be aggressive on defense and
he hasn’t let us down,” Bertrang
said. “We also had good rebounding
from Jonah Thomas, Kyle Smith and
Clayton Martin.”
Smith, Thomas and Martin also
scored six points in the win while
Mark Loggins and Tucker Gardiner
scored two each.
