STUDENTS REWARDED
Banks County Middle School officials and teachers have implement
ed a new Reading Rewards Program this school year. The program
is directed by media specialist, Paula Bond, with assistance from
the Language Arts department and the school's administration.
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are participating in
the program by reading books. For each book the students read,
their name is entered into a drawing for prizes. Recently the school
had its second nine weeks and first semester drawing, giving away
three Wal-Mart shopping sprees, three Banks County Spirit Shirts,
three lunches with the principal and a Wii party for one lucky win
ner and a friend for the second nine weeks. The semester prizes
were a mountain bike and an iPod. The students are very excited
about the new Reading Rewards Program, school officials said.

Jackson EMC offers $1,000 scholarships for students
Jackson Electric Membership Corporation
(EMC) is currently taking applications for three
scholarship awards based on academic ability,
faculty recommendations and financial need.
Winners will be chosen by a scholarship com
mittee, which will review each application in
search of the most qualified applicants.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship is named for
a leader in the state and national electric cooper
ative movements. Several of these $1,000 schol
arships are awarded statewide to undergraduate
students enrolled in or accepted by a Georgia
college, university or technical school.
Jackson EMC also offers two additional $1,000
awards through the A.T. Sharpton Scholarship
program, named in honor of a late chairman of
the Jackson EMC Board of Directors.
The A.T. Sharpton-Gainesville State College
Award is available exclusively to students
planning to attend Gainesville State College.
Financial need is a primary consideration, but
judges will also consider academic average,
standardized test scores and/or faculty recom
mendations.
The A.T. Sharpton Unrestricted Scholarship
Award is funded through the same trust but is
payable to undergraduate or graduate students
enrolled in any accredited two- or four-year col
lege or university in the nation. Financial need,
academic average, standardized test scores and/
or faculty recommendations are all considered
equally by the judges.
Scholarship eligibility is restricted to high
school seniors who have already been accepted
to college or students who are currently enrolled
in an accredited college, university or technical
college. Applicants may be full- or part-time stu
dents at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Scholarship recipients must be a customer of
Jackson EMC or the son or daughter of a cus
tomer, and they must also be a resident of the
home served by Jackson EMC.
Students interested in applying for any or all
of these scholarships should contact their area
high-school guidance counselors or complete the
application online at the Jackson EMC website.
The deadline for applications is Friday, Jan. 25.

scholarship programs, contact Kay Parks, public/
