Don’t underestimate the
importance of a ‘Night-Night’
A s we pulled out of
the busy parking
lot, my daughter
realized that she had left her
beloved “night-night” some
where in the store we had just
visited. Inside, we searched
every nook and cranny as
my daughter sobbed fiercely.
Before long, we had three
salespeople joining in on the
hunt.
This wasn’t the first time
that we had lost night-night. In
fact, night-night has been accidentally
left behind on two other occasions.
Night-night is a raggedy, old, tattered
blanket, which my daughter is con
vinced she has to have for comfort
when she is sleepy.
Once we left night-night behind
while sightseeing at the beach. After
spending an hour retracing our steps,
we found the blanket hanging on a
giant duck and blowing in the wind
in the middle of an outdoor shopping
area.
Another time, night-night was acci
dentally left at a pizza parlor. It wasn’t
until we got home that we realized it
was missing. We drove all of the way
back to the restaurant to find it was
closed.
Knowing the drama I was in for
that night, I banged on the door until
someone finally opened it to see what
all of the commotion was.
I purchased the lovely soft yellow
baby blanket my daughter later named
“night-night” when she was still in my
tummy. It was trimmed in satin and
reminded me of my dear
blanket from my child
hood. I’ve been told that
I carried my night-night
until it was a tiny five-inch
square.
My husband also had a
yellow blanket, which was
said to have matched the
same description. He was
very attached to his night-
night, too. His grandmoth
er joked that when he got
older, she would probably
have to line the inside pocket of one of
his sports coats with it.
A few weeks ago, when we were
visiting the pediatrician, I asked what
he thought about my daughter still
dragging the nasty thing around when
she is sleepy. The doctor pulled me
into his office to show me something.
It was his beloved night-night! It was
a tattered piece of cloth framed and
hanging above his desk. He said that
was his prized possession!
Exhausted after searching up and
down every single aisle in the large
store the other night, we finally found
good old faded, tattered night-night. It
was in a trashcan. My daughter’s tears
of sorrow quickly turned to tears of
joy. She hugged night-night as though
it was a long lost friend. Relieved that
night-night had finally been found, we
were all ready for a good night’s sleep.

Upset with planning commission
Dear Editor:
I am ashamed that our Banks County
Planning Commission turned down the
request of an agricultural business to
relocate to Banks County? Is this not an
agricultural community?
The people who have protested must
look around their own house and see
where things are now coming from
(China).
Do you want to eat eggs and chicken
from China? I won’t be eating from our
farm here in Banks County. Thanks to
the people and the planning commission
of Banks County for sending another
agricultural business to China.
Sincerely,
Mike Sands
Homer
Editor’s Note: The Banks County
Planning Commissions never made
a recommendation on the request by
Country Charm Farms of Gainesville.
The company withdraw its request
before a vote was taken by either the
planning commission or the county
board of commissioners.

The Corn
The Corner Cafe (formerly
David’s Corner Cafe ) is now
open in Lula.
The restaurant has made
Lula its home for many years.
Long time Lula resident,
Mary Barbee, was the original
owner. Then, for 10 years, Ken
Kirkpatrick (Kens Corner Cafe)
offered country style, home
cooked southern food, includ
ing fried green tomatoes, corn
nuggets and fried chicken (all
of which are back at the New
Corner Cafe).
Ken’s Corner Cafe was a break
fast staple for the Lula locals.
Following Ken for a brief three-
year stint, the Corner Cafe was
called “David’s Corner Cafe.
Now Maureen Marr has taken
over ownership. Marr, moved
to Lula from Ocala, Fla., where
she lived for 27 years. With
years of cooking, serving and
management experience in the
food service industry, Maureen
comments, “I want everyone
who eats at my restaurant to
walk out the door and say
WOW!”
She adds, “We have replaced
much of the kitchen equipment
and are now replacing many of
the former canned and frozen
menu items with fresh vegeta
bles and home-cooked meats.”
Maureen is happy she moved
to Lula, “Where true southern
hospitality and generosity is
genuine and appreciated.”
The mission of the cafe is to
offer the highest quality fresh
meats and vegetables, top-
notch service and cleanliness
while maintaining great prices,
Marr said.
The Corner Cafe is a full-ser
vice (sit-down) restaurant but
also provides fast-service break
fast to-go specializing in “hot
biscuits to go” each morning.
Call ahead at 770-869-0222.
A different breakfast special
is offered every day. The daily
lunch special varies and may
include made-from-scratch
meatloaf (now home made with
ground Black Angus beef),
fresh seasonal fruit salad, veg
etables, black eyed peas or
mashed potatoes (made with
real potatoes).
Sunday dinner may feature
roasted turkey and dressing or
pork tenderloin and sweet pota
to or squash casserole, maca
roni and cheese, green beans or
collard greens.
Soups are also homemade; the
selection may feature cream of
potato, corn chowder, turkey or
vegetable beef.
All desserts are prepared
and baked fresh by the Corner
Cafe’s kitchen staff, includ
ing Orange Coconut Cake,
Better-than-Anything-Cake and
Strawberry Cake (which is the
house favorite).
The Corner Cafe is now open
for dinner Friday nights until 9
p.m. Friday night favorites are
Buckhead New York Strip Steak
and Fried Fish Dinners (each at
$9.99).
The cafe is located at 6099
Lula Road at the intersection of
Hwy. 365 and 52.
The cafe is open daily includ
ing Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to
2 p.m., Fridays until 9 p.m. and
