The win was third in as many
games for BCHS against Commerce
this season. The Lady Leopards also
defeated the Lady Tigers 50-49 on
Nov. 30 and 51-47 on Dec. 29 during
Commerce’s holiday tournament.
Prior to Saturday’s contest against
Commerce, BCHS fell to Union
County 47-29 Friday night in subre
gion play. Kennedy and Hunter led
the Lady Leopards with 10 points
each.
“Union County is a very good
team,” King said. “We did have a
strong third quarter.”
In the third quarter, BCHS out-
scored Union County 17-4, but a
slow start of the gate in the first half
hurt the Lady Leopards’ chances on
the road.
Union County led 18-4 after the
game’s first eight minutes and took
a 29-9 lead into the locker room at
halftime.
Samm Kennedy finished with five
points for BCHS while Saxon added
four.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Leopards
fell to Dawson County 47-33 on the
road. Saxon was the lone player in
double figures with 10.
“We didn’t show up mentally ready
to play,” King said of the subregion
road game.
Lauren Gibbs added six points for
BCHS with Randi Seabolt finishing
with three.
The Lady Leopards, who hosted
Rabun County Tuesday night (see
story on page 1B), will travel to East
Jackson High School Friday for a 7
p.m. subregion game.

High School Wrestling
Mat Leopards have rough go at Titan Cup
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Banks County High School wrestling coach Kasey
Hanley was honest when assesing his team’s perfor-
mace at last weekend’s Titan Cup hosted by Blessed
Trinity High School in Roswell.
“We didn’t wrestle as hard as we could have,” the
coach said. “We didn’t wrestle to our potential. It
may have been nerves facing the level of competi
tion we were facing.”
Facing several larger schools and quality wres
tling programs, Hanley’s squad did earn six medals.
The event awarded medals for wrestlers who placed
in the top six of their respective weight class.
Earning medals for the Mat Leopards were:
•Jarod Gregory, fourth place, 189.
•An Pham, fourth place, 130.
•Matthew Patton, fifth place, 171.
•Nathan Holloway, sixth place, 135.
•Wesley Angel, sixth place, 145.
•Demetric Dempson, sixth place, 160.
Hanley commended the efforts of Gregory noting
he has “shown tremendous heart” all season wres
tling up in weight class.
Earlier in the week, BCHS did manage a 42-27
win against a strong Clarke Central team, a Class
AAAA program.
Nathan Ward, Pham, Holloway, Angel, Dempson,
Patton, Gregory and Evan Gossett each recorded
wins for BCHS.
Hanley’s team has now tied a school record for
wins in a season with 24.
The team is currently dealing with several injuries
as the coach said he hopes the team can heal up
going into the Clarke Central Duals.

BCHS Boys... continued from page 1B
Bill Redmon continues to make
a positive impact since joining the
team and scored three points against
Commerce while Chris McDuffie,
Justin Beasley, Brett Armour and
Kasey Hudgins all scored two.
The Leopards didn’t fare as well
in two subregion games last week.
BCHS fell to Union County 94-61
Friday as Michael Ross put on a
shooting clinic with 49 points.
“Anything he put up, went in,”
Ruth said.
The BCHS coaches tried a differ
ent starting lineup for the contest
going with Duncan, Brett Armour,
Chase Armour, Worley and Beasley.
Overall, however, it simply wasn’t
the Leopards’ night. The team was
just 4-of-17 from the paint in the
first quarter and was also 31 percent
for the game.
“They completely dominated the
basketball game,” Ruth said. “We
tried to change things up by going
with a different lineup, but it’s hard
to go over that mountain. It’s always
tough for us to play there.”
Worley and Griffin provided two
of the only bright spots by scoring
14 points each.
Last Tuesday, BCHS also had a
rough go of it during a trip to
Dawson County in a 58-35 setback.
“We went over what we needed to
do against them, but it didn’t work,”
Ruth said. “We will make more
adjustments the next time we play
them. Everyone of their players can
make the 3-pointer.”
The Leopards had trouble finding
the handle on offense scoring just
five points in the first quarter and 10
in the second.
“We buried ourselves with that
slow start,” Ruth said.
BCHS will travel to subregion foe
East Jackson Friday at 8:30 p.m.
