PAGE 2B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Outdoors With Skipper Husband, wife make great hunting team W e have attended church with another couple, Conrad and Jean Lively, for the past few years. They moved to North Georgia from the Brandon, Florida area outside of Tampa. My wife and I had known them from a previous church down that way. Conrad and Jean love to deer hunt together especially on hunting club prop erty down near Eufala, Alabama. Their son Dale, from Brandon, hunts this 5,000 acres with them. There are only 12 or so members, thus there is plentyof land for each hunter. Well, Conrad and Jean headed down that way the end of last month to do some final hunt ing and help Dale, get things in order to take back home, till next season. Alabama’s deer season runs through Jan 3l. On Monday of that last week, Jean scores with a nice size doe to fill the freezer. Conrad’s gun is unused. It is now evening dur ing the middle of the week. Jean is hunting a dove field, sitting together in a stand with her son Dale. It’s almost dark now, but some deer are heading their way. Dale tells his mom, “one is a nice buck.” Dale has a very good scope that gathers light better than his mom’s. He tells mom, “You take the buck.” The Great Outdoors By Skipper Smith 706-677-1520 She replies, “If I miss, you go ahead and shoot too.” The buck has now come within one 150 yards. Jean pulls the trig ger on her 308 and the buck drops. But he’s back up again. Dale now shoots twice. They watch the buck run off, as it heads towards a steep ravine with a creek at the bottom. They can now hear the buck in the water. With only a LED light on a cap and a small flashlight they take a look quickly, but decide they had better head back to camp for help in finding this deer. Back at camp, they round up a four-wheeler from some members that haven’t left yet, get a hold of Conrad — who had heard the shots —and head to where they figure the deer is. Sure enough, it is on a small island built by bea vers, with the water some five feet deep at one end of the island, and ice on the ground. A couple of the braver ones head to a shallower place to get to the deer. With no waders, water comes over the boots, and I know it was cold. They had to get the deer over some logs before they could get it up the steep bank. After that was accomplished, they were able to use a winch and cable, off the four-wheeler, to pull the deer up the steep bank. It was too steep and slippery for the hunters to drag it up by themselves. It turns out this is a nice sized seven- pointer. So once again, Jean scores, and Conrad’s gun has remained silent. Now in fairness to Conrad, he did tell me that he saw some deer, but passed on them, as he didn’t want to have to clean them. Well, that was his excuse. Oh, by the way, I didn’t tell you the age of these senior citi zens. Jean will be 76 this year, and Conrad is 78, with two hip replacements. I am sure proud of these two friends. It gives me hope for the next 10 years and also for others of you senior citizens. You are never too old to enjoy being in the woods. Call me with your story.
