WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PAGE 7B School News REVOLUTIONARY WAR PROGRAM Banks County Elementary School students learned about the Revolutionary War period during a recent program. The program featured Joseph Habersham Chapter president Ted Smith, dressed in his Elijah Clark Militia Color Guard outfit; state color guard member Wendell Gunn in his George Washington uniform; and Roberta Gunn, member of the Tomochichi Chapter of the DAR, dressed in her colonial costume. Revolutionary War topic for BCES Program Banks County Elementary School students recently learned about the Revolutionary War period and were shown Cherokee reproductions of tools, includ ing a ceremonial turtle rattler, and took part in a rain dance. The program featured Joseph Habersham Chapter presi dent Ted Smith, dressed in his Elijah Clarke Militia Color Guard outfit; state color guard member Wendell Gunn in his George Washington uniform;; and Roberta Gunn, member of the Tomochichi Chapter of the DAR, dressed in her colonial costume. Members of the group spoke about the events leading up to the Revolution; Continental Congress; signing of the Declaration of Independence and prominent Georgians taking part in the events (Dr. Lyman Hall, Button Gwinnett, George Walton, Edward Telfair, Joseph Habersham, Elijah Clarke and Samuel Elbert). The Joseph Habersham Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a histori cal, educational, and a patri otic nonprofit organization that seeks to maintain and extend the institutions of American free dom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for national symbols, the value of American citizenship and the unifying force of e pluribus Unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people. The chapter is an area orga nization comprised of mem bers from Banks, Franklin, Habersham, Rabun, Stephens and White counties and serves these counties as well with its programs and contest involving Boy/Eagle Scouts, students and Veterans’ Hospitals. “We could not have accom plished this without the sup port of the Woodmen of the World, Community Bank & Trust, Hollow Log, Quality Foods, McGahee Griffin Stewart Funeral Home, Wal-Mart, CVS Pharmacy, Habersham Primary Care, Mount Vernon Mills, Eagle Greens Design and Grading, Ingles Markets and individual donors for their financial contri butions,” leaders stated.
