ROTC scholarship offered
The Joseph Habersham Chapter, Georgia Society, Sons of the American
Revolution, in an effort to recognize outstanding JROTC high school seniors
from the chapter’s service area of Banks, Franklin, Habersham, Rabun,
Stephens and White counties, has established a college scholarship fund.
The “Captain Hilliard Almond Wilbanks Scholarship Fund” is aimed at
promoting awareness of what America’s highest military award for valor in
combat represents. In that vein, the fund has embraced the following initia
tives.
•Courage. We embrace the indomitable courage demonstrated by the recip
ients of America’s highest military honor for valor as an ideal that should
endure in all ways of life.
•Sacrifice. We support sacrifice and service above self as principles that all
Americans should strive for as citizens of a free and prosperous nation.
•Patriotism. We promote love of country and are committed to support and
defend the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
•Citizenship. We believe that America’s destiny lies in its youth and are
committed to helping them become worthy citizens of our country in the
belief that ordinary Americans have the potential to challenge fate and
change the course of history.
•Integrity. We believe that the mark of a true hero is to have the moral cour
age to do what needs to be done because it is the right thing to do.
•Commitment. We steadfastly support the valiant men and women who
serve their country in the same spirit of commitment and sacrifice as those
who preceded them.
•Educate and raise awareness in the American public about the Medal
of Honor and what it represents by promoting the values of courage, sac
rifice and selfless service, and patriotism through outreach, education, and
example.
The Joseph Habersham Chapter is beginning a campaign to raise funds for
the Captain Hilliard A. Wilbanks Scholarship Fund and an interest bearing
account has been opened into which funds will be deposited. The funds are
not to be co-mingled with any other of the chapter’s bank accounts, officials
said.
A Captain Hilliard A. Wilbanks Scholarship Fund committee has been
established from the active membership of the Joseph Habersham Chapter
and this committee will be responsible for management of the fund.
Tax-deductible contributions are being taken. Those who are interested
in making a donation are asked to send a check to the “Captain Hilliard A.
