DAVID BOWEN Meeting our need according to HIS riches in glory It was a night like any other night we’d spent in our home of 18 years, but what happened before the dawn of a new day seemed surreal. We had lost every thing we owned other than the clothes on our backs. Since it was nighttime— those clothes were a pair of pajamas and socks. One may ask, “Why men tion something so insignifi cant?” Trust me those items became very important to me as we stood outside our burning home. While I watched some mate rial things go up in smoke, I thought about others that were precious to me. Those that were tucked away in draw ers, closets and secret places around our home. I thought about family photos, those of my children when they were babies; I thought about my wedding gown—something that I had hoped to pass down to someone someday; and I thought about one special drawing my son made in first grade. It was something that made me smile each and every time I looked at it. I was in despair; my life had changed forever in one single night. Of course as I sat and watched my home go up in smoke, it seemed as if the blaze that warmed me in the 19 degree tem peratures, would never end. I began to seek the Lord for guid ance. I’d prayed throughout the ordeal, and praised as well, that my husband, Chris, and I got out without injury considering we awoke to a burning home at 4:38 a.m. As those thoughts swirled in my mind and the fire continued to burn, several shadows began to appear in the distance. They were shadows of my neighbors who braved the 19 degree temperatures to stand beside us in our time of need. It didn’t matter that it was the coldest night of the year. It didn’t matter that in was in the early morning hours, but what mattered was that we were in need and they were there—no matter what. As the day wore on others continued to come to assist us. You know, as I think back, I’m convinced they were angels in disguise— on a mission to comfort us. Sure they looked like our family and friends but they were truly on God’s mission that January morning. Some people brought clothes, some brought food, some handed us money, while others were there to encourage with hugs, handshakes and kind words. I also remember another who offered us a place to sleep while we were figuring out exactly what we were going to do. Would you believe the answer came the same day? You know that ques tion. Where are we going? We were lucky enough, no let me rephrase that, God was good enough that we had three different offers to move into vacant homes before the sun went down. During what started out to be one of the worst days of my life I began to see Philippians 4:19 come to life right before my eyes. It says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” We woke up on Sunday, January 20, with the clothes on our backs and today we are living proof that we are truly blessed.
