PAGE 6 B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 2008 Church News The Lord works through people You know it’s amazing how the Lord shows up and shows out when you need Him the most. The days and weeks since our house fire have been miraculous. God has used so many people to show His love for us. I confess that I’ve learned something through all of this. I’ve learned to receive. Before this time in my life, I’d be willing to help someone out, but I didn’t really know how to receive from others. The Lord taught me a most valuable lesson, by receiving from others, I am really receiving from Him. I also realize that the giver is getting a blessing as well. It reminds me of the parable in the Bible where Jesus tells the people that they gave Him food, water, clothed Him, and visited Him. They questioned Him asking when they did these things for Him. And His answer can be found in Matthew 25:40. And the King shall answer and say unto them. Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done It unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.. In my situation, the generosity continued almost daily as we reeled from our loss. You know it seems like the Lord’s use of strangers to touch us, has been one of the biggest blessings of all. It was the morning after the fire as we sat in a local res taurant eating breakfast and getting our “to-do” list going. I had a cell phone call or two as well. And you know how it is, sometimes you can hear the conversation next to you. As we were eating all of a sudden the cashier came up to our table and said somebody paid for your break fast. Sure enough, when we took our check to the counter to pay, the man, who was dining with his wife and two children, left a $20 bill to cover our morning meal. This is the hand of God working through people. It was that same day, I was talk ing to my pastor on my cell phone while I was in Wal-Mart trying to find some reading glasses. After we got off the phone, an employee came up to me, held out her hand and had these words to say, “This isn’t much, but I want to help you all I can.” What happened next still brings tears to my eyes. She had a bunch of change rolled up in two or three one dollar bills. This was one of the most humbling gestures I’d ever experienced in my entire life. Again, this is the hand of God working through people. Looking back over the past few weeks, I am most thankful for my church family, friends, family, and the peo ple I work with. I can still envision a young man I work with pulling up in my yard with a recliner in the back of his car; while others brought chest of drawers, a dining room table, clothes, suitcases, a microwave, lamps and just about everything else you could imagine if you look about your home. Again, this is the hand of God working through people. Another group of people who have touched my life so much, is the stu dents at the middle school where I work. They held a fund-raiser for me and raised a large sum of money. That touched my heart so much, but it’s the little things that make a difference too. I had a young man come up to me on Valentine’s Day and give me a card with two dol lars enclosed. There was a note in it as well, because we were raising money for a cause at school. The note read, “Don’t put this money in the jug; this is for you.” Then anoth er student found a “teacher looking” vest at a second hand clothing store. She proudly came into school the other day and handed me the gift that she’d picked out especially for me. She said “this looks like it was made for you,” with a big smile on her face. So, as I look around my rented home I see that God has blessed me with everything I need, and I am most thankful for Him. Sherry Lewis is a resident of Pendergrass and a former resident of Maysville.
