Augustus selected for educational award
Jonathan Augustus, a graduate of the Banks
County Adult Learning Center, was honored at
the recent EAGLE Institute in Atlanta.
Jonathan earned his GED in 2007 and gradu
ated in July 2007 with a group of 50 graduates
from the Banks and Jackson County Learning
Centers. Jonathan was nominated by Sharon
Clark, director of Adult Learning and Literacy
in Banks County, as a positive role model for
adults who want to continue their education
and increase their employment opportunities
by earning the GED.
“Jonathan impresses me as a determined
young man who wants to provide the best life
possible for his three-year-old son, Bryson,
and to emphasize the importance of education
by,” Sharon said.
Jonathan is employed by Walmart as
Automotive Service Bay Manager for the
Athens store.
EAGLE is the first statewide program in the
nation to honor excellence among adult lit
eracy students at the post-secondary level.
“The EAGLE Program seeks to spotlight the
role of adult literacy in our modern economy
and to emphasize the dignity of work,” said
Clark.
Brenda Thomas, associate vice president of
Adult Learning for Lanier Technical College,
coordinated the Exceptional Adult Georgian in
Literacy Education (EAGLE) competition at
Lanier Technical College.
The Technical College System of Georgia’s
Department of Technical and Adult Education
Office of Adult Literacy sponsors the EAGLE
awards program statewide for the 52, 146 adult
literacy students in Georgia. Jonathan was
joined in Atlanta by 36 peer delegates from
literacy programs across the state of Georgia.
The Leadership Institute recognized and
honored those students who have demonstrated
superior achievement in adult literacy classes.
The Institute provided workshops in leader
ship topics to build on the strong leadership
characteristics the student already exhibits.
The EAGLE delegates also visited the State
Capitol while in Atlanta.

Banks County Relay teams hold dinner fund-raiser
Relay for Life teams from across Banks County
came together on Saturday night for a fund
raiser sponsored by Outback Steakhouse at Banks
Crossing. New Salem United Methodist Church
assisted the relay teams by allowing the event
to take place at their fellowship hall. Over 120
people enjoyed dinner cooked for them and all
the money raised benefited the American Cancer
Society. The Relay for Life committee would
also like to thank Chick Fil A, Sonic, Sonny’s
and Captain D’s for donating ice tea for the
event. Keep watching here for future fund-raising
events! Thank you to all who participated!
Please remember Sidney Wilson from Lula as
she is in Eggleston Hospital. She has been bat
tling cancer and is now battling other problems
that have developed over the past week.
The community was saddened to hear of the
death of Bernice Morris. She was the wife of
Cleal Morris. I enjoyed talking to Mr. Morris
on Wednesday. We talked about many members
of our community that had already passed away.
He remembered my great-grandfathers, Turner
Vaughn and Tom Parson. He also knew my grand
fathers, Joe Harris and Henry Parson. He was
telling me how my grandmother, Lucille Parson,
had got burned and passed away when my father
Hoyt Parson was only 13- months-old. We talked
about people in the community. I remembered
many of the members of our community pass
ing away when I was younger, including Vester
Adamson, Will Pritchett, Mrs. Gowder and many
others. Mr. Morris had a lot of history of the
community to share. He told me where Paul and
Ralph Parson’s landing strip for their planes was
and that he had flown with them when he would
come home to visit as a young man. He was in the
Air Force and lived in Atlanta before returning to
the community. I guess it’s funny how we always
come back home. His wife will be greatly missed
by the family, community and friends, but most
of all, by her companion, Mr. Morris. This was a
great loss to him. If you get the chance to talk to
