Outdoors With Skipper
Early temptations of turkey season arrive
I t reminded me of a juicy
piece of steak held out in
front of a hound dog, or
a tweety bird in front of a cat.
Perhaps even a fox in a chicken
pen. That was the situation I faced
last Saturday morning.
The event took place in our
back pasture. I always look out
the kitchen window or the dining
room glass doors, to see if there is
any wildlife out back.
I noticed a black object scratch
ing among the leaves, and then
a second. From their chest hung
a beard, not just a little bit of a
beard protruding out, but a nice
one of nine inches or so. Two nice
gobblers were within shooting dis
tance from my second story back
porch. I thought in my mind how I
might hide myself, as I crossed the
open porch to the railing.

Wondered, if I could ease my
shotgun barrel over the railing,
without being seen. I know that
is not very sporting. However, a
strip of turkey breast cooking in
the deep fat fryer sure would taste
good. I was brought back to real
ity, as I realized we were still two
weeks or so away from turkey
season. Saturday, March 22, opens
the season, and this was only the
8 th. Two weeks to wait.
Perhaps they will come back,
and I will be setting up against
a tree waiting for them. Perhaps,
just perhaps, I will hear the sizzle
of strips of turkey breast frying.
Monday night of this week, I
stood on the porch and blew my
owl call. I didn’t get a gobble back
in response. I did hear a cackle or
two in response, as they must have
been getting situated on the roost.
You can bet I will be in the woods
on opening morning of turkey
season. I can’t take much more of
that kind of temptation.
If you have an outdoors story,
give me a call.

The Banks County High School
Class of 1995 is establishing a

Smith, who was a standout athlete
for the BCHS Leopards, died fol
lowing a car accident last summer
while attending a basketball camp in
Alabama with members of the North
Oconee County High School team.
The annual football game between
BCHS and North Oconee has been
named the Shawn Smith Bowl in
his honor.

Numerous lettermen return for
next season including Demetric
Dempson, Jared Gregory, Tremain
Mayfield, Wesley Angel, Jordan
Waters, Justin Fincannon, Viet
Pham, C.J. Pilcher and Brett Wood.
Also, Stephen Giles, Nathan
Holloway, Jeremy Greenway,

Newell.
“We hope to get everyone sepa
rated into different weight classes,”
Hanley said. “Many of our returning
wrestlers are 152 and up.”
The BCHS wrestlers will attend
various camps this summer in prepa
ration for the 2008-09 season which
will see the Mat Leopards competing
in an even tougher area. Seven-time
defending Class A state champion
Jefferson High School is moving
into Class AA and will be in the
same area as BCHS.
High School Soccer
Lady Leopards open region play with win
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
A three-goal performance by
Lacey Bennett helped the Banks
County High School Lady Leopards
open region play with a 4-0 win
against East Jackson Monday night
at home.
Erika Evans added the other goal
for the Lady Leopards who contin
ued to take giant steps forward this
season.
Coach Mike Boomer said Andrea
Hunter, Maria Mendoza, Kaylee
Johnson and Tori Heu also played
well in the win.
Leading up to the region opener,
the BCHS girls faced some strong
non-region foes. BCHS fell to
Aquinas 9-1, Hart County 5-0 and
Clarke Central 8-0.
“The losses were tough but proved
to be great practice for the upcoming
region schedule,” Boomer said.
The Lady Leopards will play
Oglethorpe County Wednesday in
a game rescheduled from Friday
because of weather. The team will
also play at North Oconee Friday in
another region match.
“This week will be tough and will
help determine most of the seed-
ings for our region,” Boomer said
Tuesday.
Leopards overcome sluggish performance, record win
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
While he didn’t believe his team
played up to its capabilities, Banks
County High School boys soccer
coach Chris Cooley did see his
Leopards record a win in the region
opener Monday night.
BCHS defeated visiting East
Jackson 3-1 behind goals from Luis
Contreras and Sam Shanehche in
the first half and one more from
Contreras in the second half.
East Jackson’s lone goal came in
the match’s final seconds.
“The boys honestly looked flat and
we didn’t play well,” Cooley said.
“Hopefully we can pull our socks
up when we go against Oglethorpe
County.”
The match with Oglethorpe
County was originally scheduled for
last Friday but had to be moved
to Wednesday (today) because of
weather.
“We’ve had some good strong
games recently,” Cooley said. “We
have excelled in those matches and
I’m hoping we will step up our play
in region now.”
The BCHS coach said the team’s
captains have been playing well.
Oscar Augilar has been a stand
out on defense with Shanechche in
charge of the midfield and Contreras
leading the offensive attack.
“Alex Vang has been our star play-
maker wherever he is on the field,”
Cooley said.
The Leopards will also travel
to Bogart for a match with North
Oconee, another region foe, Friday
at 5:30 p.m.
First and Ten... continued from page 1B
Regardless of what happens the rest of the way (the
season is still in its early stages and still has miles to go),
it was nice to see members of the Leopard team enjoying
such a big win last week.
It was also nice to see them enjoying it with class and
dignity.
That is a sign of a program being coached and directed
the right way. Remember that the next time you see one
of the BCHS baseball coaches and be sure to mention
it to them.

Win... continued from page 1B
Also contributing in the win were:
•Justin Bowen, two runs scored.
•Tyler McEntire, sacrifice bunt.
•Kasey Hudgins, hit, RBI.
•Wesley Angel, run
•Kyle Smith, walk, run scored.
The game actually was close in the
early innings. Neither team scored
in the first as Commerce left the
bases loaded in the bottom half.
BCHS began to take control in
the top of the second pushing four
runs across. Commerce answered
with two runs in the bottom half but
would get no closer.
“We were able to continue hitting
the ball well throughout the game
and our pitching and defense settled
down and kept Commerce’s offense
in check throughout the rest of the
game,” Lord said.
