Lady Leopards begin season with wins

Through two matches this season the Banks County
High School Lady Leopards have enjoyed perfection on
the tennis court.
Coach Lisa Hulsey’s team opened the new season by
defeating Commerce 5-0 last Wednesday. It was the first
time the BCHS squad was able to compete in a match on
its new on-campus facility.
In singles play, Krista Dodd defeated Ann Carter 8-4,
Maria Enslen defeated Madison Knicks 8-2 and Lezlee
Bonnett defeated Martiza Miller 8-0.
The Lady Leopards also took both doubles matches
as Brittany Cook and Megan Whitey defeated Sarah
Leffew and Bree Haggard 8-2 and the team of Lauran
Taylor and Taylor Seabolt defeated Jaimee Thomas and
Heather Boyer 8-0.
The BCHS girls claimed the Jackson County cham
pionship the following day by defeating East Jackson
5-0.
In singles play Dodd recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No.

Regular season success continues for Leopards
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Banks County High School var
sity boys tennis coach Mike Ruth
almost hated to say anything in
fear of bringing up the old sports-
related jinx.
However, the veteran Leopard
tennis mentor knows the BCHS
program has set a new level of
excellence in the past few seasons.
In 2006 the team went undefeated
in the regular season. Last spring
the team lost just one regular sea
son match.
In 2008, BCHS is off to a 2-0 start
following wins against Commerce
and East Jackson.
The Leopards swept Commerce
last week as they made their debut
at their new on-campus complex.
Ruth said it is always nice to defeat
an old rival.
“We always enjoy beating
Commerce,” Ruth said. “That was a

nice way to start
the season. We
are very glad
to have a new
facility in our
back yard. It is
great being able
to practice and
play on campus.
We are very appreciative of this
great new facility.”
Kyle Walker cruised to an 8-0 win
at No. 1 singles against Commerce
while Trey Martin took an 8-1 win.
Garret Hayes also won 8-1 at No.
3 singles.
Jacob Westmoreland and Nathan
Deal earned an 8-1 win at No. 1
doubles with Chase Minish and
Viet Pham winning 8-3 at No. 2
doubles.
BCHS also defeated East Jackson
last week 4-1. Playing sets, Walker
won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles with
Martin winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2
singles.
Hayes won his first set at No. 3
singles 6-3 but fell 4-6, 4-6 in the
next two.
Westmoreland and Deal won 6-4,
6-2 at No. 1 doubles with Minish
and Pham cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win
at No. 2 doubles.
Clay Carroll and Todd Parks won
an exibition doubles match against
East Jackson as did Alex Banks and
C.J. Pilcher.
The BCHS Leopards will host
Dawson County Thursday in a
match rescheduled from earlier
this season. Ruth’s team will then
host Fannin County Tuesday. Both
matches begin at 4 p.m.
The subregion setup this spring
will see BCHS playing each team
twice with one match counting in
the standings and the other used for
tiebreaker purposes, Ruth said.
