Kenneth Branson Simmons, a
senior, has been named 2007-2008
PAGE STAR Student for Banks
County High School. The
announcement was made recently
at the school by Art Wheaton,
principal of Banks County High
School.
Simmons, the son of Kenneth
Simmons and the late Penny
Simmons, selected Lesa Duncan,
math teacher and multiple time
winner of the award, as his STAR
teacher.
The PAGE Student Teacher
Achievement Recognition
(STAR) program, in its 50 th year,
is sponsored by the Professional
Association of Georgia Educators
(PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce and the
Georgia Department of Education.
Since its inception, the STAR
program has honored more than
20,000 students and the teachers
they have selected as having had
the most influence on their aca
demic achievement. Students are
selected on the basis of their SAT
scores and class standing/scholas
tic averages. Branson scored 1370
on his SAT (verbal and math only)
making him eligible to be named a
Georgia Scholar.
STAR begins each year in par
ticipating high schools throughout
Georgia when the STAR student
is named and chooses a STAR
teacher to share in this recogni
tion. The students and their teach-
ers are honored by their schools
and receive special recognition in
their communities from more than
200 statewide civic organizations
and businesses that sponsor local
programs. Students then com
pete for school system titles, and
those winners compete for region
honors.
“Branson is not only a scholar
student, but he is also very active
in the school where he is manager
of the band,” said Banks County
School System superintendent
Chris Erwin. “He has also worked
with the agriculture program and
served on various county comit-
tees. We are very proud of Branson
and Ms. Duncan and the academic
excellence they exemplify at Banks
County High School.”
