MES STUDENTS WIN FREE BOOKS
Maysville Elementary recently held its spring book fair. The theme was Reading Road Trip. A
drawing was held each day for a chance to win a free book. Halie Money, Katie Wilson, AJ
Johnson, Celina Shipman and Larry Timms were some of the winners.
Oratory contest planned April 17
An oratory contest for high school
juniors and seniors in Banks, Clarke,
Jackson, Franklin, Madison, and
Oconee counties is planned.

of Agriculture and the Georgia

Council. The essay contest was
open to students in grades four
through 12.
Department of Labor offering internships
The Georgia Department of Labor
is offering its summer internship
program for up to 80 students.
The internship program is designed
to provide students at universities,
colleges and technical colleges with
practical work experience, an oppor
tunity to earn school credit, and a
chance to make up to $1,225 this
summer.
“The internships have been high
ly successful in providing students
with valuable experience in a real
work environment,” said state labor
commissioner Michael Thurmond.
“Interns work with the staff in the
Georgia Department of Labor’s career
centers and vocational rehabilitation
offices throughout the state, as well
as in our central office in downtown
Atlanta. Emphasis is placed on com
plementing the students’ classroom
learning with professional work
experience, which will serve them
very well as they plan and eventually
begin their careers.”
Interns will work 25 hours per
week for seven weeks, between
June 2 and Aug. 2, and will be
paid semi-monthly. The program is
open primarily to college sopho
mores, juniors and seniors presently
enrolled in, or accepted to, a college,
university, or technical college in the
state, or a Georgia resident enrolled
in a similar school in another state.
School credits may be earned, but

on Monday, March 17, for the
2008-2009 school year.

ed interns will be allowed to choose

cation and a one-page essay as fol
lows: “Rewards and Benefits of
Interning at the Georgia Department
of Labor.”
Interns may also be required to
complete a job interview conducted
by a member of the department’s
staff.
