Photo by Randy Crump BY CHRIS BRIDGES The Banks County High School baseball team made their longest road trip of the regular season last Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Diamond Leopards, the ride home from Fannin County seemed even lon ger. BCHS fell to the host Rebels 10-0 as the three-hour road trip was not a good one. “We played about as bad as you can possibly play,” said Leopard coach Joe Lord. “We allowed seven walks, we hit three batters and made fours. We were horrible and not ready to play.” The end result was a 10-0 subre gion setback. “We have to be more focused on the road just like we are when we’re defending our home turf,” the coach said. “We never even got off the bus. We embarrassed ourselves, and hpefully that game served as a wakeup call.” Playing at Fannin County has become an annual obstacle for the Leopards. “We’ve never played a good baseball game up there,” Lord said. “We have to be ready to play on the road.” The BCHS team went back to work the following day with a four-hour practice. More practice time followed Friday since the scheduled subregion game with Union County was postponed until April 4. UCHS had a conflict and requested the game be moved and BCHS was able to fulfill the request. The Leopards will play at East Jackson Thursday at 5:30 p.m. High School Soccer Leopards turn up defensive intensity Members of the Banks County Wrestling Club also competed in the state qualifier at Jefferson. BY CHRIS BRIDGES Going into the 2008 season, Banks County High School boys soccer coach Chris Cooley had a sound strategy when it came to defense. The third-year BCHS coach decid ed to put his most athletic players on the defensive side of the field. The result has been positive as the Leopards have been impressive on the defensive end. The past two matches, both region contests, have ended in 1-0 scores. BCHS won its match against Oglethorpe County while falling to North Oconee. Helping lead the defensive effort to this point in 2008 have been Oscar Aguilar, Marco Olandez, Andre Aguilar amd Marco Monreal. Oscar Aguilar has been a force at sweeper while Olandez is the team’s only left-footed kicker. Sophomore Donald Jordan has been effective in goal. Senior Matt Lyons stepped in during the Oglethorpe County match blanking the Patriots. In the victory against Oglethorpe County last week, Alex Vang scored the match’s lone goal on a 40-yard free kick. “We had to really defend hard the last 15 minutes,” Cooley said. “It was a great defensive second half by both teams.” The Leopards traveled to North Oconee High School last Friday falling 1-0 to the Titans. Cooley said the match was actually played on a wider, shorter field. “They like to use that field to their style of play,” the BCHS coach said. “They scored off a corner kick. It was actually kind of a lucky goal.” Cooley said it was another stand out defensive effort by his team and noted it was one of the few times this season his Leopards were defended effectively. BCHS was scheduled to play Lakeview Tuesday and will host Union County High School Wednesday (today) for senior night beginning at 4 p.m. www.mainstreetnews.com Track ... continued from page 1B FISH DAY • 4-6” Catfish $35.00 per 100 • 6-8” Catfish $55.00 per 100 • 8-11” Catfish $89.00 per 100 To purchase 8-11” catfish, you must bring your own container and water (Too big to bag).
