Accidents
Sex offenders list now available on GBI website
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation
maintains a list of registered sex
offenders on its website (www.ganet.
org/gbi).
The GBI is the central repository
for Georgia’s Violent Sexual Offender
Registry. The registry contains infor
mation about sex offenders who have
been released from prison, placed
on probation, parole or supervised
released after July 1, 1996. The web
site contains a search form where
offenders may be located based on
name, city, zip code or county.
For each offender, the website
details the offender’s address, physi
cal description, age, date of convic
tion and crime. Most of the offenders
also have photos available.
By state law, a sex offender will be
notified by the Georgia Department
of Corrections, the Georgia Board
of Pardons & Paroles, and/or private
probation agencies that they must
register as a sex offender with a
sheriff and their county of residence,
county of employment and county
where they are attending school.
Sexual offenders will remain on
the registry for a period of 10 years
and will receive a verification form
each year on the anniversary of their
initial registration. Sexual predators
are required to verify their informa-
tion every 90 days and remain on the
registry for life.
As of July 1, 1999, sexual offenders
who have more than one prior con
viction for an offense listed by state
law - or who have been convicted
of an aggravated offense, such as
aggravated child molestation - will
remain on the registry for life and
will receive a verification form each
year on the anniversary of their initial
registration.
If the offender is enrolled, employed
or carries on a vocation at an institu
tion of higher education in Georgia,
they are required to provide the name,
school address or enrollment status.
Offenders who move to another state
are required to report to the sheriff’s
office where they last registered with
in the state, and to designate a law
enforcement agency in their new state
of residence.
Offenders who move to another
county in Georgia, are required to
register with the sheriff of their new
county of residence in addition to
notifying the sheriff of their previous
county of residence.
OFFENSES
Offenders placed on probation,
parole or supervised release from
prison after July 1, 1996, are required
to register for the following offens-
es: rape, sodomy (against a minor),
aggravated sodomy (against a minor
or an adult), statutory rape (unless
the age of the perpetrator is 18 years
of age or younger), child molestation,
