DFACS officials await word on building funds
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Local Department of Family and Children
Services officials are anxiously awaiting word on
approval of the new state budget by the governor.
If everything goes according to plan, funding
should be included for a new building, which
local officials have been seeking for years.
County director Kenny Jarvis told Banks DFACS
board members during their April meeting last
Wednesday afternoon that recent indications are
positive concerning a new headquarters.
Jarvis recently met with Banks County chair
man Gene Hart as well as officials from the State
Property Commission and the state Department of
Human Resources office.
“The money for the new building is in the pro
posed state budget,” Jarvis said. “However, the
governor has not signed the new budget yet. He
does have line item veto power and could strike
it out.”
He said there are five counties in the state slated
to receive funding for a new building during the
new fiscal year and Banks County is one of them.
“There is a possibility we are number five on
the list,” he said. “Let’s hope we don’t become
number six.”
During the recent meeting with Hart and state
officials, Jarvis said the building process was
discussed including the way the bids will be
advertised. The county will make sure the land is
appraised and surveyed.
“It will be a matter of the bids then going out
and the plans draw up,” the director said.
A new headquarters for Banks County was
first discussed approximately a decade ago, even
before Jarvis became director. He took state offi
cials on a tour of the current facility which the
department has outgrown.
“We would like to have room to grow in our new
building,” Jarvis said. “I feel we will get a new
building, I just don’t know when.”
Tentative plans are to construct the new build
ing, if funds are approved, near the current
Adult Learning Center and Health Department off
Thompson Road.
BJC Medical Center officials look for grant funds
With its foundation in place, BJC
Medical Center is looking for grant
funds.
During its monthly meeting
Monday — which lasted eight min
utes — the BJC Medical Center
Authority got an update from CEO
Jim Yarborough on foundation activ
ities.
He’d earlier reported that the foun
dation’s application for an Avon
grant to upgrade its mammography
equipment had been rejected.
In the past month, he said, the
authority has decided to seek “a
significant contribution” for vehicles
at the nursing facility that would
be used to transport residents on
outings, including doctors’ appoint
ments.
In addition, Yarborough said a
“front porch atmosphere” is planned
for BJC Nursing Facility, although
the state fire marshal nixed actually
putting it on the front of the build
ing.
“We are going to relocate it,”
Yarborough said, adding that the
foundation will seek the donation of
supplies for its construction. Staff
will build the porch.
“We are working on a lot of ini
tiatives,” he said. “I’ll keep you
posted.
In other business, Finance Director
Bill Williams said he’ll have draft
versions of next year’s budget ready
by the May meeting.
Edna Hix of the BJC Medical
Center Auxiliary, reported that her
group earned $530 in its $5 cos
tume jewelry sale. She reminded the
authority that a stretcher purchased
by the auxiliary for the nursing facil
ity will be dedicated in honor of the
late Claire Griffin at a ceremony
Monday at 3 p.m. Mrs. Griffin, who
contributed more than 24,000 hours
of volunteer service, died in February.
The stretcher will be dedicated dur
ing a memorial service in her honor
in the Unit B Day Room following
the annual Auxiliary Social, and a
memory plaque will be dedicated.
In other business, the authority
approved granting consulting and
courtesy staff privileges to Derek B.
Pollard, Radiology; James Bailey,
Jonathan Davis, Louis Fuerstman,
Michael Kordus, Oguchi Andrew
Nwosu, and Kathirae Severson, all

ment; and Jenangir K. Rathor, ultra
