May 2008 will mark the Freedom Garden’s first anniversary at the Northeast Georgia History Center, Gainesville. The Freedom Garden was cre ated, adjacent to the history cen ter, to honor all military veterans, whether they gave their life or offered their life while serving in America’s Armed Forces. To celebrate the occasion, the History Center’s Veterans’ Fund will contribute $75, or 25 percent, of the price, to have a military veteran’s name engraved on an appropriate granite pillar. The contribution of $75 reduces the price each donor pays to $220, rather than the regular $295. The veteran’s fund received a special donation this year, giving the his tory center a resource to subsidize a limited number of additional names for this anniversary time period. To take advantage of the special $220 price, donors should contact the history center at 770-297-5900 prior to Memorial Day, May 26. A veteran’s information form will then be mailed to each donor. Veterans who are honored have their name, highest rank attained, branch of service and years of service inscribed on granite pillars that are identified by a certain time period of military service. The American Red Cross is urg ing all type O negative donors to donate blood soon, as its supply of the much-needed blood type cur rently stands at less than a day’s supply. Although there is a constant need for all blood types, type O negative donors play a critical role in main taining the blood supply. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be safely given to any patient, regardless of blood type. It is used extensively by hospi tals, particularly in life-threatening In addition, there are family pillars, where two or more vet erans, regardless of generations, are grouped under a family name. There is an additional cost of $295 for a family name listing. Over 800 veteran honorees’ names have been engraved on the pillars in the Freedom Garden’s first year of existence. Other features of the anniversary month of May include: •The beginning of recorded interviews from veterans tell ing “Stories from the Freedom Garden.” The recordings are a part of the history center’s oral history project. •The annual Memorial Day con cert by the Northwinds Symphonic Band at the First Baptist Church on Green Street, Gainesville, will again be co-sponsored by the his tory center on Monday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. There will be no admis sion charge. •An open house and reception honoring all military veterans and their families has been scheduled for Sunday, May 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge for the Freedom Garden and his tory center galleries. The Northeast Georgia History Center is located at 322 Academy Street. For more information, call 770-297-5900. emergencies or when a patient’s matching blood type is not readily available.
