16th annual art show ongoing
The 16th annual Art Show and
Sale is being held at the Banks
County Public Library in Homer
through May 18 during normal
library hours.
Many local and regional artists
will have work on display and for
sale to the public. This event
has expanded with well over 50
local artists expected to participate.
These contributing artists will have
three to five of their original works
on display. It also offers visitors a
chance to see the talent available in
this area.
Awards will be presented to the
first, second and third place work
in each category, such as pottery,
woodcarving, painting, sculpture
etc. and there will be a Best of
Show award, a People’s Choice
award and a Children’s Choice
award.
The People’s Choice will be voted
in by library patrons during the
exhibit and the Children’s Choice
will be voted on by the children
who visit, including the classrooms
who will visit as a field trip from
the Banks County Primary School.
This event culminates with a tea
for the artists and guests on Sunday,
May 18, from 2-4 p.m. The public
is urged to come out to meet the
artists, see their work and learn
what inspires them. Information
on future library events will also be
available.

Low-cost spay, neuter service May 15
The Athens Regional Spay Neuter
Center — part of the Athens Area
Humane Society — will offer a free
local transport service with a low
cost spay/neuter program this week
in Commerce.
The drop-off time is 8 a.m. on
Thursday, May 15, at the Wal-Mart
parking lot in Commerce.
Pet owners will check-in, com
plete medical forms and pay for
services. Those who are late will
be unable to participate in the trans
port program.
After check-in, animals will be
loaded into a transport van and
taken to the Athens Regional Spay/
Neuter Center. Medical staff and a
full-time veterinarian are available
at the center.
After surgery, animals will be
placed back into their kennels and
provided a snack. Pets will be
allowed to recover overnight at the
center before making their way
home the next day.
The following morning, the trans
port van will return to the pick up
location. Pick-up times are spe
cific and owners are asked to not
be late.
The costs are: Dog spay, $65;
dog neuter, $55; cat spay, $45; cat
neuter, $35; rabies vaccine, $7; and
other vaccines, $10.
To date, the center has been open
for six months and performed more
than 1,500 sterilization surgeries
with no major complications.

Job training for seniors offered
Legacy Link offers free job train
ing for Banks County residents age
55 and older.
The senior community service
employment program offers part
time on-the-job training positions
for qualified people. The qualifi
cations include: age 55 and older,
must be a resident of the state
and must meet federal low-income
guidelines.
On-the-job training means that the
participants will be assigned to train
at a government or non-profit agen
cy for 20 hours per week. The pay
will be minimum wage for any time
spent training, attending approved
classes or program meetings or any
other related training activities.
Program participants perform a
wide variety of duties, including
clerical/office support, providing
social services to other seniors and
members of the community, help
ing in the kitchen of senior nutrition
sites and other tasks.
The participants will also undergo
assessment, testing and counseling
while in the program. Participants
will also be referred to jobs in the
area as they become available.
The program is funded by a grant
from the United States Department
of Labor through the National
Council on the Aging Inc. For more

Minish, Rogers marry Feb. 23
Abby Victoria Minish and Jeffery
Reed Rogers were united in mar
riage Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the
First Baptist Church of Commerce.
The bride is the daughter of Terry
and Janice Minish, Commerce.
The groom is the son of Mary
Lou Dill, Alto, and David Rogers,
Commerce.
Dr. Carlton Allen and Rev.
Christopher Balthazor officiated.
The bride was given in marriage
by her father.
Kelli Hill served as maid of
honor. Other bridal attendants
included Angie Balthazor, Carmen
Echols and Cindel Eavenson. Macy
Seagraves was the junior bridesmaid
and Kristin Lord served as flower
girl.
Tobie Jones served as best man.
Other groomsmen included Dave
Rogers, Andrew Minish and Ric
Mitez. Wesley Counts was the junior
groomsman, and Brian East was
ring-bearer.
Travis Hewell and Chris Nation
served as acolytes.
Vocalist Shannon Palmer provided
music for the occasion, accompa
nied by pianist Johnnie Blair. Ashley
Lord and Laura East kept the bride’s
book.
A reception was held following the
wedding in the Family Fellowship
Center of the church.
After a honeymoon in the Bahamas,
the couple lives in Commerce.
