Individual placings included: Branson Simmons, first, dendrology; Chace Brown, first, saw timber estimation; Fabain Huzair, first, compass; Jesse Carlan, first, reforestation; Koltan Pendley and BJ Thurmond, second, forest management; Kellie Brown, second, disorders; Caiti Brown, second, Timber stand improvement; Cory Keesee, sec ond, ocular estimation; Zeke English, fourth, land measurement and An Pham, fifth, pulpwood estimation. By winning area the team qualified to compete at the state competition and finished second among the top 18 teams from Georgia. BCHS placed first in the team activity with Zeke English, first, land measurement, Branson Simmons, third, dendrology and Cory Keesee, third, ocular estimation. DULCIMER GROUP PERFORMS The Banks County Schools Dulcimer Group recently performed for the Kiwanis Division 10 Governor's Rally at the Civic Center in Gainesville. The event honoring Governor Mick MacGuire and First Lady Bonnie was attended by Kiwanis leaders across northeast Georgia. Students participating in the program include: (back row, L to R) Macy Milford, Olivia Nation, Katlyn Poole, Jody Milford, Savanna King, Madison Embrick, Theresa Barefoot (music specialist); (front row, L to R) Sean Hester, Trevor Eggleston, Emma Matthews, Kadin Carlan. The group played a selection of folk songs written for the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer. Several of the dulcimers used in the perfor mance were built by the students who played them. Di. They qualified to participate at the state contest by placing first in the region earlier this year. The team was seventh and the highest placing North Region team in the contest. Individual placers included: Daniel Anderson, first, compass and Marissa Reems, tied for first in soil sampling. SMOKEY c m M SMOKEY THE BEAR VISITS BCES The Georgia Forestry Commission and Smokey the Bear visited Kelly Peppers third grade class at Banks County Elementary School on May 6. The students learned about wildland fires and fire safety, as well as the story of Smokey Bear. Nicole Powell graduates from college Nicole Powell is a 2008 gradu ate from Agnes Scott College in Decatur. She graduates with a degree of bachelor of arts in psy chology.
