PAGE 2B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2008 Outdoors With Skipper BCMS tennis 2008 Passing love of fishing to new generation R ecently with crickets and worms in hand, my wife and I, along with our four-year-old grandson, Carson, headed to Lake James, a private lake in the middle of the woods near Commerce, to let the youngster catch some fish. He was about to become a big brother, as his little brother was soon to be born. In fact, it was the next day on a Sunday, which just happened to be my wife’s birthday, that little Blake Loveridge came into the world All are doing fine and Grandpa and Grandma are certainly excited. Well, back to our fishing trip. Heading to the lake, I noticed that the road was real wet, and found as I headed up a hill, that the truck was slipping a bit on the clay. We made it to the spot, and saw a bunch of bream near the dock. Casting out the cork and cricket, I then handed the rod to Carson, and soon it was bending double. He did a great job reeling in the fish, a nice sized bream. If you recall, we wrote a story in the paper, telling about our taking him to the same lake about this time last year, when he was three. Then he caught his first fish ever. With Grandma resting in the shade, it was one fish, then two, then three, on up to eleven bream. All were released, as we introduced the future generation to hopefully, a real love for fish ing. It was time for a little play, as he was somewhat tired of catch ing so many. One thing I have learned and read about: let them do what they want to as well as fish. If it’s skipping rocks on the lake, or wading in the water, or catching the bait in the baitwell, let it be a fun experience for them. The serious time of fish ing will come later. It was getting hot now so it was time to head back home. I was worried about heading down the hill from the lake, so I had them stay out of the truck until I made it down the slippery road. Now with all of us in the truck, we headed to the woods, and back up another hill. Once more we began slipping back wards. I had them get out, and decided with the wet grass next to the clay road, I would prob ably slip off into the woods, and really get the truck stuck. Thank goodness for cell phones. I made a call and help would soon be on the way. While waiting,we watched a hawk fly off with a snake in its claws. It was a big, long, snake, too. I figured he had been perched on top of a fence post enjoying his lunch. The tractor arrived, and soon we were headed back home. Take a child fishing with you this summer, they are the future of this sport. Call me, if you have an outdoors story. Skipper Smith is an outdoors columnist for The Banks County News.
