WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2008 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PAGE 5A Letters to the Editor Obama is not a patriotic American Dear Editor: I hope many Americans wake up during this year’s election. This past weekend was Memorial Day weekend and it was a time for us to reflect back to where our country has been and plan for our future. At the same time, praying for all the fami lies who have lost loved ones for our freedom. We can never forget the price our freedom has cost. All the precious lives lost and blood that has been shed. I too, am a proud veteran. From a veteran’s point of view (mine any way), I would rather have a president with integrity, honesty and experi ence. John McCain is my choice because he has all three and has had much experience as a veteran. He was a prisoner of war and takes our flag seriously. He takes our pledge of allegiance seriously. As a veteran, I would rather have someone run our country that had been a veteran and been a prisoner of war. It is time for people to wake up. Obama will not wear a flag pin on his clothes. Nor will he place his hand over his heart and say the pledge of allegiance. I don’t under stand how so many Americans can Appreciates fellow motorist Dear Editor: We still have decent people here in Georgia! This morning I acci dentally pulled out in front of a man driving a silver pickup. He had to swerve immediately and hit the bar ditch, almost losing control of his vehicle. I followed him to see if he was all right, believing I was going to get cussed out, which I felt I deserved. Instead, he ran over to me and asked if I was all right and gave me a big hug because I was so shook up at what almost happened. I knew immediately that he was a Christian because of his actions. He invited me to come and visit his church, The Grove Baptist, which I plan doing as soon as I can. I thank God for people that have the love of Jesus in them and show it in their daily lives as Mr. Fields did. Sincerely, Doris L. Sturgill Thinks column was sickening Dear Editor: I picked up The Banks County News last week and got a shock to read the piece by Kerri Testement. I was surprised that you all would print such as she said in the first few lines about telling her child where not to put her finger. If I had talked like that when I grew up, and I don’t talk like that now, well, I would have gotten a whipping from my mama. No wonder children are saying such when they hear and read it. I think she needs to print an apology to the public. Some folks may laugh about it, but I thought it was sicken ing. I don’t recall him ever being in the military, unless you want to count the two years he attended a Muslim school. Who should be our next president...A true American POW or one who refuses to wear and take pride in our flag? This year is cru cial, think, pray, pray some more, research the candidates well then cast your vote. One other little comment, I don’t think Bill Clinton would make a good first lady. Taking a shortcut I t was that time again... time to do something about the gray that was beaming from the top of my scalp. My son, who is well over six feet tall, was making men tion of it on a daily basis. When I finally found a few extra minutes in my busy schedule to take care of the problem, it was eleven o’clock at night. I was too tired to stop by the store and pick up a box of chestnut brown hair color. Instead, I remembered that I had a box of velvet black stashed in one of the bathroom cabinets. My natural color is actually black, but over the years, as the gray crept in, I compromised and went lighter in order to “look younger.” That night I convinced myself that if I only left velvet black on my long hair for about 10 minutes, surely it would have the same effect as leaving chestnut brown on for the required 30 minutes. After exiting the shower, I imme diately knew that I had made a major mistake. I held my little solid black dog, Molly, up beside my face in the mirror. My hair was darker than hers. In fact, it was so dark, it not only looked cheap and cheesy, but fake. To make matters worse, I knew I had to be at work in only a matter of hours. The next morning, I went by my daughter’s school to find my friend, Becky. She is the type of friend who will give you her honest opin- sherri Stephens ion if you ask for it. “You need to go straight home — take a sick day! Wash it 100 times, maybe it will help.” We got some good laughs over my mis take before I bravely went on to work. Many of the adults I encountered tried not to hurt my feelings by saying that it didn’t look so bad. However, different children I knew made comments such as, “It’s just not you,” or “It looks horrid!” and “It’s just a tad too dark.” Whether it was the cashier at the grocery store or the UPS man, a variety of people I came in contact with over the next few days offered advice of how to “solve” my hair dilemma. I used washing powders the first night, dish soap the sec ond, potent dandruff shampoo the next evening, and baking soda the following afternoon. None of it worked. By the end of the week, I surren dered and took the time to run by the drugstore to purchase a chemi cal which promised to remove hair color. The receptionist at the dentist office had Googled hair color mess-ups on the Internet and found it for me while I was getting my teeth cleaned. Around midnight that night, I used the product and it worked. In fact, it worked so well that it even stripped out my natural color! My hair was now a mixture of orange, yellow and light brown. Since I had to be at a special event at 8 a.m., I got up at 5 a.m. and colored my hair once again. This time I used light brown — after all, I didn’t want to take any chances. I strictly went by the directions on the box. Around 5:45, after exiting the shower, I glanced in the mirror to find that my hair was once again dark black. It was actually even darker than the velvet black I was trying to remove in the first place. I showed my husband, who couldn’t help but chuckle as I cried. I later found that my hair was evi dently very porous from all of the chemicals I’d put on it throughout the week, causing another mess-up. I called my beautician, who said that I probably really damaged my hair by taking so many shortcuts. Her advice to me was that maybe I should just drop in and get a real short cut for summer!
