Friends take in enjoyable day on Lanier
L ance Herrin who lives at
Lake Lanier, teamed up
with a friend of many
years, Dave Cullen, recently for
their quarterly outing.
Dave and Lance get together
every three months or so for a
fishing, golf or hunting trip. On
a Tuesday, in the middle of last
month, they met up with striper
guide Shane Watson at Lake
Lanier for a half-day of fishing.
Climbing aboard at 6:30 a.m.,
it wasn’t long before Lance was
hooked up.
His fish of the morning
weighed 15 and 17 lbs, while
Dave’s were 12 and 6.
Dave hooked perhaps the big
gest fish of all, but it broke off
in the trees underwater. When
the fish hit the herring, they
would literally tear up the water
as they
inhaled the
bait. They
were flat lin
ing with blue
back herring.
The weath
er was cool
that morning
and nice.
Nature was
adding to the
enjoyment,
as they watched a bald eagle
soar overhead, and observed
four little fox pups on the shore
playing next to their den.
It wasn’t long before lunch
time arrived. Lance says his
traditional fishing lunch is
as follows: sardines, saltines,
Tabasco sauce, bread and butter,
pickles, sharp cheddar cheese
and IBC root beers. He claims
it is “mouthwatering.” I would
debate that statement.
Their next trip is to head south
to the Jacksonville area. Their
fishing will be done in the St.
John’s river for largemouth bass.
Also on the agenda is a round
or two of golf at the Sawgrass
course in Ponte Vedra.
We will share with you how
they do on that trip sometime in
August.
Well, here’s to good fishing. If
you have an outdoors story, give
me a call.

With the 2008 season now secure
ly in the history book for the Banks
County High School varsity boys
tennis team, veteran coach Mike
Ruth knows his players once again
were able to accomplish many goals
this recent season.
The Leopards qualified for the
region tournament for the seventh
consecutive season and did so with
several young players. And while
the Leopards do lose some key ath
letes to graduation, 2009 has the
makings of another successful sea
son if things fall right, Ruth said.
BCHS was led this past season by
seniors Kyle Walker, Garret Hayes,
Jacob Westmoreland and Nathan
Ward. Freshman Trey Martin also
became a key member of the var
sity team in 2008 along with fel
low freshmen Chase Minish and
Viet Pham. Junior Charles Frink and
Todd Parks also contributed along
with freshmen Alex Banks and C.J.
Pilcher.
“We will have some battles for
some spots next spring,” said Ruth,
who has coached the program since
2000. “With Kyle and Garret gradu
ating, we will have a couple of
singles spots open. We might have
to move some of our doubles players
into singles competition.”
The BCHS coach said he was
proud of the fact his team qualified
for the Region 8-AA tournament
emerging from a tough subregion.
“We played well against Morgan
County at region,” Ruth said. “Kyle
battled to three sets in his match and
Trey played well against a senior.
We had a victory at No. 1 doubles.
We had them on the ropes early.”
The coach noted Martin drew a
high level of praise for his perfor
mance at the 8-AA event consider
ing he was a freshman.
“Trey is really going to be a good
player,” Ruth said.
The varsity boys tennis program
has been one of the most consistent
at BCHS in recent seasons and Ruth
hopes that can continue next spring.
“We will keep at it and hope to get
back to region and maybe even to
state,” the long-time Leopard coach
said.
Tournament planned to benefit football program
