Photos by Angela Gary Kingwood Resort perfect spot for weekend get-away North Georgia's hidden jewel BY ANGELA GARY Nestled deep in the North Georgia mountains is a hidden jewel that makes a great weekend get-away for people in search of peace and quiet. Golf, spa, tennis and time at the pool, as well as gourmet dining can all be found on the beautiful grounds of Kingwood Golf Club and Resort in Clayton. You can park your car and not get in it until your stay is over and you are ready to head home. The resort is surrounded by mag nificent mountain views at every turn. As you travel along the wind ing road up the hill to the inn, you see mountain views, lush landscap ing and a welcome retreat. Kingwood began in the 20th cen tury when George E. King built a summer home in Rabun County. He built his home atop a hill overlooking rushing waters of the creek below. It opened as a golf resort in 1968 after two develop ers purchased the property. At that time, Kingwood offered a 48-room hotel, dining room and golf course. It closed in the 1970s but was opened as a spa in the 1980s. In 2000, Kingwood reopened as a hotel, with a restaurant, golf course, pro shop, conference cen ter, spa and fitness center. Located in Clayton, it is a short drive from our area. In just over one hour, you will find yourself in a mountain paradise. The lush grounds are beautifully designed and make a great backdrop for the 18-hole championship golf course. The resort also offers a restaurant and lounge, nature trails, full ser vice spa and fitness center with weight room, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi, heated indoor pool, tennis courts. The outdoor pool is FINE DINING The peach bourbon broiled rainbow trout is broiled with peach bourbon butter. Seared trout is another entree offered at the restaurant at Kingwood Golf Club and Resort. surrounded by the mountainside and is a great place to spend a few hours. The spa offers heavenly treat ments, including manicures, pedi cures, massage therapy, reflexol ogy therapy, facials, anti-stress back treatment, hot stone massage therapy, salt scrub, mud wrap and Vichy shower. Something unique at the spa is mountain sugar kiss es, which exfoliates and moistures your lips. I had a massage from Juliet, while my friend had a massage from Carol. We were both very pleased. I do believe it’s the best massage I’ve ever had. The prices are also great and much better than other spas I’ve visited. Fine dining at its best is to be found in the restaurant. Be sure and try the tomato basil cream soup. It’s a perfect beginning to your meal. For a light meal, try the salmon and Brie salad. Pan seared salmon is served over field greens accompanied with candied wal nuts, poached pears and roasted red peppers. The salad is served with Napa Valley vinaigrette. Another night, I tried the peach bourbon broiled rainbow trout and found it a delight. The rainbow trout is broiled with peach bourbon butter.
