Using fungicides on plants correctly
State election board addresses Baldwin
To send letter calling for more election training
The State Election Board is calling for more
training in Baldwin following complaints about a
recent election.
The state organization unanimously agreed in a
meeting on June 17 in Atlanta to send a letter to
the city regarding the need for privacy when vot
ing and instructing the city to implement privacy
procedures. The state board is also reprimanding
the city regarding absentee ballot requirements
and calling for additional training.
The action comes after citizen Theron Ayers
filed a complaint alleging that absentee bal
lots were unlawfully delivered to voters in their
homes.
Gillsville discusses maintenance bids
Council to take action at next meeting, July 1
Have you ever been told that
your flower or shrub or veg
etable plant has a disease and
it could die if not treated with
a fungicide?
Well, fungicides can be an
important part of your disease
management program. If you
are not sure what a fungicide
is, it is a pesticide that is used
when a fungus or similar disease
organism infects a plant caus
ing a disease problem. A fun
gicide is sprayed on the leaves,
stems, and flowers of an infect
ed plant, producing a chemical
barrier. When the fungus spores
land on the plant surface, they
encounter this barrier and are
unable to infect the plant. The
complete coverage of the barrier
depends on how well the spray
spreads and sticks to the plant
surfaces. For this reason spray
adjuvants can be added to many
sprays. The product label usu-
ally instructs
you whether to
use these addi
tives.
In most situa
tions, gardeners
are not on a dis
ease prevention
program. They
just treat the
diseased plants
after the fungus
has infected
them. In these cases, the fungi
cide will only prevent the dis
ease from spreading and will
allow the plant to revive itself. If
you want to start the season off
using a disease prevention pro
gram, you will need to determine
when to start the first application
for the specific plants. This may
require learning about the life
cycle of the diseases you are try
ing to prevent.
After making the first applica-
tion, you have established the
protective barrier on the plant
surfaces. You must keep this bar
rier active and complete through
out the infection period to be
effective. Rainwater, sunlight,
microbial action and oxidation
decrease the effectiveness of the
fungicide. Also, plant growth
can affect the completeness of
the barrier because of the growth
of new leaves and shoots. You
will need to reapply the fungi
cide in these situations to keep
the barrier active. The fungicide
label gives reapplication guide
lines, usually in the range of
7-14 day intervals. If rainfall or
rapid growth occurs, you should
use the shorter interval between
sprays. If not, use the longer
interval. When using any pesti
cide, always read and follow the
directions on the label.

Development Authority looking to attract businesses
BY JUSTIN POOLE
The Banks County Development Authority is
looking at ways to attract new business to the
county and possibly hiring a part-time person
to oversee this effort is one of the options being
discussed.
The Development Authority discussed at a meet
ing Thursday creating an economic development
fund agreement with the board of commission
ers. This agreement would give the Development
Authority power to budget funds for the purpose
of attracting businesses to the county.
Part of those funds could be spent for a hiring a
coordinator, who would work on a performance-
based contract. Part of the coordinator’s job would
be to actively attract businesses to the area.
After a lengthy discussion on the advantages and
disadvantages of an economic development fund
agreement, the matter was tabled until the next
meeting.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at the meeting, the authority:
•met in closed session for 15 minutes to discuss
a land purchase. No action was taken when the
meeting was opened.
•discussed the Pottery property at Banks
Crossing, which has been sold. Further details of
the planned development at the site have not been
given.
•discussed new business coming into the area,
including Blimpie, Five Guys and Krispy Kreme
Doughnuts.
Food stamp requests hit record high
BY JUSTIN POOLE
The number of food stamp cases recorded at the
Banks County Health Department
last month hit a record high of
590.
The report was among those
presented to the DFACS board at
the monthly meeting last week.
Other statistics given during the
meeting include the following:
•14 ongoing cases, with 11
accepted cases in May.
•13 children in DFCS custody.
•two homes are under study for
foster homes which would bring
the total number of foster homes
in the county to seven.
•two children are available for
adoption.
•the expenditures for May
totaled $2,038, leaving $5,067
in the budget. With 85 percent of
the budget spent, the department
is expecting a small surplus after
June expenses are taken out. The
June expense report will also
show the new flat panel moni
tors. The monitors were ordered
in May but will show on June’s
expense report.
In other business at the meet
ing, a report was given on the sta
tus of the proposed new DFACS
building. Officials are still wait
ing for the design to be approved
by the state.
Also at the meeting, the board discussed adding
“success stories” as part of the monthly meetings.
