PAGE 6A THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2008 Baldwin Police Department gets $24,785 grant for equipment BY SHARON HOGAN Baldwin City Council members unani mously approved the acceptance of a $24,785 grant for the police department at its monthly meeting last week. Baldwin Assistant Police Chief Shawn Rhoades said at an earlier work session that the department has received notice that it has been approved for the grant that Police Chief Daren Osborn applied for in 2006. The grant includes $14,088 for a live scan fingerprinting system, $3,200 for a mug shot system and $7,497 for five desktop PCs to be located in the GCIC office at the police department. Rhoades said this is a 100 percent grant. “We don’t have to contribute any thing,” he said. “We have to pay up front and be reimbursed.” OTHER BUSINESS In other business, the council: •unanimously approved the surplus of two trucks used by the street and water departments. Council member Jeff Murray said, “Since the purchase of two new small utility trucks, one for the street and one for the water, we are able to surplus two of the bigger trucks.” The city purchased the two smaller utility trucks in an effort to save on fuel costs. A 2000 Ford F-150 and a 1995 Dodge Ram will be listed on govdeals.com. Acting Mayor Ray Holcomb said there is no fee to list the items on this website. The city will have to pay seven percent of the selling price if they sell. •approved payment of an invoice in the amount of $7,500 to the Steedley Hosey Firm. The invoice covers profes sional services from September 7, 2006, through May 26, 2008, for the Park Avenue project. The payment comes out of grant funds for this project. •announced a special called public meeting for 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, to discuss the Park Avenue water project. Engineers will be on hand to present the plans for the project and answer any questions that the public might have on this project. Mayor Holcomb said the city will need to acquire rights-of-way from some residents for this project and this will be discussed at the meeting. This project will include the replacement of waterlines and possibly the widening of the street. •heard from Terry Purcell, Habersham County utilities director, speaking on behalf of the Habersham County com missioners and water authority, on the relocation of Habersham County into the Savannah Basin Water Planning Region. Purcell said, “I want to say to you that we appreciate the opportunity to come.. .asking you to reconsider your previous vote.” Baldwin City Council members voted at the meeting on May 27 against signing a petition seeking to have Habersham County moved out of the Catoosa Region into the Savannah Basin Region. Purcell said, “We want to present a united front as a county, which includes the municipalities. Habersham County will be moving forward ask BANKS AND JACKSON OFFICIALS ATTEND RIBBON-CUTTING Several Banks and Jackson County officials attended the grand opening and ribbon-cutting event for Funopolis Family Fun Center on Friday. Photo by Sharon Hogan ing them to redistrict the county and move us into the Savannah River Basin.” Purcell said the county wants to present a united front to both the Environmental Protection Division and the Department of Community Affairs. Purcell said there is a statement in the letter that states it (the redistricting) would not jeopar dize withdrawal from the Chattahoochee River. This was a major concern of the Baldwin council when they took a vote on the matter. Purcell said Rick Austin, Habersham County, has talked with the EPD on this. However, no one can guarantee what the EPD will do. The council took no action on the request from Purcell to reconsider their previous vote. Baldwin resident Victoria Kelley came before the council at the work ses sion on Thursday night asking them to reconsider their vote on this also. •heard from Baldwin property owner Phyllis Marshall concerning the amount the city pays a private firm to operate its water and wastewater treatment plants.
