Outdoors With Skipper
Memories of Pop's, Buff
A fter having my father
up visiting with us
from Tampa for a
couple of weeks recently and
thinking back on his enjoyment
catfishing that one evening, I
began reminiscing about earlier
days when I was a youngster.
We lived in Tampa and my
grandparents had a lake home
in Land O’ Lakes, Fla. It was
a hour drive or less from our
house near the Bay shore. Every
Saturday, my dad and I would
drive up to the lake to visit his
parents.
Usually the car radio was
tuned to a baseball game, as we
made the drive. Upon arriving,
the first stop was the rocking
chair on the screened- in front
porch. Soon, “Nanny,” as I
called my grandmother, would
bring out a small, cold bottle of
Coke. To go with it was “Pop’s”
favorite, pork rinds.
After a bit of talking, being
a kid of 10,1 was ready to go
fishing. I had a 12’ wooden boat
with a steering wheel and a
squeeze throttle on the side. My
boat was powered by a green
metal covered 10 horse power
Johnson outboard.
The year was around 1950. We
were just getting TV in the area,
along with some window or wall
air conditioners to replace the
attic fan. Besides the beauti
ful lake front with a dock, the
front lawn was filled with slop
ing royal palm trees. Camelia
bushes, roses, and all sorts of
annual flowers filled the flower
garden at the back entrance to
the house.
There was an orange grove on
the property, and a pasture with
Black Angus cattle. One bull
Pop’s named Prince Charming.
Two ponds in the pasture were
stocked with bass and bream.
I usually could catch shiners
in the canal off the lake with a
cane pole and
a dough ball.
This was a
“killer” bait
for the bass
in the pond.
It wasn’t but
a moment,
after you
tossed out a
shiner with a
cork into the
middle of the
pond, until the cork was under.
Setting the hook, the battle
would begin. I don’t recall any
giants, but three and four pound
ers were common. Some times
we would take our collie dog
“Buff’ with us. “Buff’ enjoyed
the cool water as well as myself.
I don’t think we hardly every
missed heading to the lake on a
Saturday. I recall having boats
and fishing every since I was a
kid.
From the 12 footer came a
17-foot wooden cabin cruiser
with a 35 or so Johnson. That
boat was the one we had during
my teenage years. Out of it tar
pon were caught at the Howard
Franklin Bridge, grouper and
snook off the now Sunshine
Skyway bridge area, and Ft.
Desoto Park when the only way
there was by boat.
Well, that’s where my love for
the outdoors and fishing came
from. Thanks for allowing me to
ramble and think about the past,
and thanks Dad for taking me
fishing when I was small, for it
is an enjoyable pastime, that has
lasted till this day.
If you have an outdoors story
do give me a call.

Summer Softball
BCHS works on ‘all phases
of game' at Danielsville
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Banks County High School
softball team got a chance to show its
skills at the Championship Softball
Camp in Danielsville last week.
The camp was hosted by Tony
Acheson, head coach at Tennessee
Tech. Other coaches and players
from Piedmont, Laner, Faulkner
and UT-Martin were also in atten
dance at the event.
“It was a very good week for
us,” said BCHS softball coach Josh
Lord. “We were able to work on all
phases of the game in a pretty good
bit of detail as well as play a few
scrimmages each day. We were usu
ally matched up with Elbert County,
AC Reynolds from North Carolina
or Shaw of Columbus.”
The Lady Leopards held their own
against each of their foes, the coach
said.
“It was great for our players to get
to work with such a knowledgeable
and helpful camp staff,” Lord said.
“As coaches, we learned a lot as
well.”
Players attending included Samm
Kennedy, Kim Thomas, Hay ley
Baird, Ashley Denton, Lauran
Taylor, Brittany Cook, Laura Rose
Pickens, Kellany Merck, Catlyn
Free, Courtney Franklin, Ashley
O’Kelley, Jordan Rogers, Madison
Franklin, Madison Porter and Taylor
Purvis.
In league games last week. Banks
County defeated Oglethorpe 5-0 as
Thomas earned the win.
“We put some balls in play that
found holes and Kim got a ton of
grounders with her drop pitch,” Lord
said. “The infield played really well
behind her.”
The Lady Leopards dropped a
close 6-5 game to Madison County.
Rogers and Thomas both pitched in
the contest.
Porter had a key three-run triple.
“We did a good job of manufactur
ing a few runs with sacrifice bunts,”
Lord said. “It was good for us to
play Madison County and to play
them well. They are probably the
best we’ll see at slapping and drag
ging. They will give the defense fits.
Overall, we executed and defended
them pretty well.”
Those games complete the sum
mer league schedule for the BCHS
softball team.
Challenge... continued from page IB
A total of 18 teams competed
in the competition which consisted
of five-man sled pushes, two-man
sled and one-man sled. Speed was
measured in the pro shuttle and the
40-yard dash.
The 40-yard farmer’s walk with
a 75-pound dumbell in each hand
and the tire flip competition, with
large tractor tires, added to the
strength comeptition in addition to
the 185-pound bench for reps.
The one-on-one bull pull competi
tion and the tug-of-war rounded out
the events.
“We are happy for the accomplish
ments of all of our linemen who
competed,” Armstrong said.
Baseball... continued from page JB
Returning starter Justin Gibbs has
also been one of the key offensive
players in June.
Lord said Gibbs has been doing a
solid job of using the entire field and
getting on base.
Chris Porter remains a solid defen
sive player who can hold down any
of the infield positions.
“We are a senior laden team now,”
Lord said. “The rest of the way I
would like to see our seniors con
tinue to lead our team. The younger
players who have been out with
us this summer have a lot of good
examples to learn from.”
