PACE 2B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2008 Outdoors With Skipper Not bad for a first effort in Georgia J oe Rinckey and his wife Rebecca were on their honeymoon. They had traveled from Naples, Florida to Georgia, where Joe’s wife’s parents live in Flomer. Having fished mainly in salt water, and caught most every species there, this was to be his first fish caught in Georgia. Giving it a try in March at the public area of the Soque River out of Clarkesville, they arrived around 7 a.m. on a Wednesday morning. The skies were overcast and it had been raining. The normally crowded spot was empty, as they had it all to them selves. Joe spotted a large trout on the other side away from skipper smith if y~\. ./ v r Rf f ,! . ,rrj rr ONE THAT DIDN'T GETAWAY Joe Rinckey shows off his trophy catch which was his first fish caught in Georgia. the sandbar. Crossing the river, Joe got in a position to cast his panther martin spinner. This was a large fish and Joe was using an ultra-lite spinning outfit with four-pound test line. It hit on the first cast and the tug-of-war was on. For 15 long minutes Joe fought the fish. Across the river, his wife Rebecca was videoing the see saw battle. Oh, no, the fish got off. Joe now jumps into the river to grab it in his hands, but the slippery fish pops out. The fish, like Joe, is worn out and drifting with the current. Fortunately, it lodges under a log and Joe is able to get a hold of it once more. This time it is not going to get away. The fish turned out to be a 26” Brown, weighing in at 8 lbs. That fish is now in the freezer, not to be eaten, but to soon be mounted and placed on the wall. Sure a great way for a Florida fellow to be introduced to fish ing in Georgia. I do believe he will break that record, as Joe and his wife have moved up to Georgia. If you want to find Joe, just check the rivers of North Georgia.
