We Do NOT Need a Part-Time Senator
Letter to the Editor
Jim Butterworth is campaigning for
Senate on the basis that serving in the
Senate is a part-time job. He tells his
listeners that he is aware that January,
February, and March are full-time
months while the Senate is in session,
but the other nine months are part-
time. Is that the kind of Senator we
need?
I am stunned that the good people of
the 50th District would even consider
replacing Nancy Schaefer as their
State Senator. I am a loyal supporter
of Nancy Schaefer. As I think she is
one of the most honest politicians I
have ever known. I say this because
we need full-time representation.
I was employed by the same
employer where Butterworth currently
works. I flew with Delta Airlines for
30 years, and 1 can tell you that the
stress and demand that this job
consumes you with, is overwhelming.
Most importantly is the amount of time
that it keeps you out of town. I can also
tell you that Delta Airlines does not
care what other job you have. They
expect you to be there. It is one thing
to have been a local Commissioner
who attends a couple of meetings a
month, but quite another to be a full
time Senator for eight counties.
Senator Schaefer’s opponent is a junior
pilot, which means he does not get to
fly all convenient trips or when he
wants to, but has to fly trips at all
different times that require extra rest
when you get home. That is just one
more reason why Jim Butterworth
becoming our Senator makes no sense
whatsoever. I know also, that Delta
Airlines frowns on this because they
want their pilots to be rested, not
distracted, and ready to deal with the
post 9-11 demands of flying. Senator
Schaefer’s opponent owes that to the
safety of his passengers.
Being a Delta Airline pilot is a noble
profession and something for which to
be proud. He gives much detail about
his life on his website and yet not one
word about his current full time job
that he is not going to give up to be a
Senator. I think that is very revealing
and was an intentional omission on his
part that all of the voters of the 50th
district should know.
We must keep Nancy Schaefer as our
Senator. She is truly a full time
Senator with a proven record, who
consistently cares about her District,
and has done a terrific job. Senator
Schaefer has earned another term and
she will give us full-time
representation.
The run-off is on August 5th and is
extremely important. I hope all the
fine people of the 50th district will
return to the polls and support this
dedicated public servant.
