Planners approve hotel request
New schedule system to be used
at BCHS during 2008-09 year
When the doors open at Banks
County High School on Friday,
students will be following a new,
revamped schedule.
The new setup applies to all
students in grades 9-12.
This timetable provides addi
tional remediation and accelera
tion opportunities for students.
Superintendent Chris Erwin
noted that with the new schedule
an increased level of learning for
all students is anticipated.
“Other counties in Georgia have
successfully implemented this
schedule to provide assistance
to students, and they have seen a
tremendous growth in the gradu
ation rate,” said Art Wheaton,
principal of Banks County High
School. “We have to explore
innovative options to meet the
needs of our students. Our goal
is for every child to graduate
ready for the work force or post
secondary education. This new
schedule should assist us in meet
ing this goal.”
Support for the new schedule
came only after much research
from the teachers, administrators
and students of the school.
Lesa Duncan, last year’s STAR
Teacher, served on the committee
that studied the scheduling pos
sibilities.
When she addressed the Board of
Education about the committee’s
findings she told the members, “I
really think the new schedule will
benefit all the students especially
those who need extra chances and
additional help. Other students
will enjoy the enrichment oppor
tunities and honors projects. All
of the students will benefit from
this.”
Erwin commented on how
impressed he was with the com
mittee’s work trying to maxi
mize efforts to meet the needs of
today’s students.
The superintendent noted: “The
beginning of the year and the new
schedule will call for flexibility,
but eventually it should enhance
the learning environment. What is
important to remember is that bus
routes and times will not change
because of the new schedule.”
Transportation for all students
will continue as it has in the past
each day of the week. Those who
do not need the additional hour
of remediation or assistance but
must ride the bus to school will
have plenty of options accord
ing to Christine Bray, assistant
principal of Banks County High
School.
Those students who arrive early
to school on Thursdays will go
to designated supervised areas of
the school building to participate
in different planned programs
including mentoring, book clubs,
etc. Those who need additional
assistance, credit recovery, or
practice will receive help in small
group settings. Those who have
transportation and do not need
additional support will report to
school at 9 a.m. for the second
period class on Thursdays.

Planning commission members in
Banks County gave approval for a
new hotel and the expansion of any
existing business at their meeting on
Tuesday night.
Banks County Planning
Commission members, in a 3-1 vote,
approved a conditional use for a four-
story hotel to be located at Banks
Crossing. Paul Patel, Premier Hotel
Group, Lavonia, requested the permit
to build an 80-room Fairfield Inn &
Suites at a site located next to Ryan’s.
Planning commission member Keith
Segars voted against this request.
Patel said the hotel would be built
on 1.4 acres of the 3.25 acre site. The
site is currently zoned commercial.
A restaurant was previously located
on the site. Patel said he has already
invested thousands of dollars to get
rid of the old building and clean up
the site. The proposed hotel will be
part of the Marriott hotel chain.
Patel said a Marriott hotel will bring
new people to the area. “Marriott
has already pre-approved the hotel,”
Patel said. The facility will include
an indoor pool and meeting rooms.
Several of the current hotel owners
at Banks Crossing spoke in opposi
tion to Patel’s request. Dr. Jayesh
Patel, the owner of three of the
Banks Crossing motels, said Banks
Crossing already has enough rooms.
Another motel will hurt the existing
motels in the area. Dr. Patel said.
Dr. Patel also said a Marriott would
not bring new people to the area.
Dr. Patel said the current motels are
not at full occupancy and the motel
owners are running the motels them
selves instead of hiring people.
The motel owners have approached
Banks County Board of Commission
Chairman Gene Hart about placing a
moratorium on new motels coming
to the area - unless it is a minimum
100-bed facility with 5,000 square
feet of meeting rooms, Patel said.
OTHER BUSINESS
In the second request on Tuesday’s
agenda:
•the planning commission unani
mously recommended approval of
a conditional use permit for a busi
ness expansion for Michael and Kay
Butcher. The Butchers’ request was
tabled from the meeting in July.
The Butchers’ are seeking the permit
to expand their business located on
Model A Drive in Maysville. The
business sells Model A parts, pri
marily over the Internet, said Keith
Covington, Banks County Marshal.
Several of the planning commission
members said they had traveled to
the site and observed some delivery
trucks making deliveries to the busi
ness and they did not feel the dust
was an issue.
